Didn't know how to properly word the Topic so here it goes: Have you ever thought about the small injuries, aches, pains etc... we sustain when it comes to Hunting and or preparing for hunting season. Case in Point....just this season already, Ive had 2 cases (albeit small) of poison ivy on my wrists setting up treestands, a ladder stand and cutting walkways, and shooting lanes. Saturday was the 1st Sit of the season and I woke up Sunday morning (guessing from climbing up and down the treestand and ladder stand) and my right knee was sore as can be. Also, back in early Sept I moved a stand around to a different spot on the tree and the stand shut on me when I was holding it and pinched my thumb (felt just like a hammer had slammed on it) man I wanted to scream everything but Holy when that happened lol Also, setting up stands and getting stuck with sticker bushes and the pain that causes.... lol I know sounds like a bunch of whining and belly aching but just pointing out the small things we come to while Hunting lol All in all it is worth it and I wouldn’t change anything about it.
My worst injury I can recall when it come to hunting was when I was pulling my bow back in my stand practicing aiming at all my lanes. When let off my bow, my right arm shot forward and it felt like I blew my shoulder out. It took my breath away and just cringed for a bit. I could hardly pull my bow back after that incident for a couple days. I'm sure there are tons of incidents that have happened where I hurt myself or got hurt hunting one way or the other. Like glassing myself with my scope shooting at a doe with my rifle. I remembered walking into my dad's house right after it happened with blood pouring down the bridge of my nose lol. I've beat my body enough that aches and pains is just part of the every day routine. The only thing I really have to watch out for is my ankles. I have turned them to many times playing softball and basketball over the years that stepping on a rock or log crooked can make it so I am almost unable to walk. That is why I always have 9" boots on when in the woods.
Today I was hunting public land by my house because I didn't have time to run to the farm. I used a blind because it was suppose to rain from 3-4 pm Man am I sore from sitting in that little chair. To top it off Yesterday was leg day at the gym so my legs are already spent, Kind of glad I didn't shoot one the drag would of been brutal.
Indeed I think I need to invest in one of those bigger fancy ones. I use one of those ones that have the triangle seat it has a little back rest but doesn't help much.
Poison ivy, turned ankles, getting tore up by some brutal bryers, tripping and falling on sticks, rocks, slipping down hills, too many times to count. Worst one was in October of 2014, I climbed into one of my older stands I hadn't changed out. I stood on it for a couple seconds and heard a loud crack and down I went nearly 25 feet. I split my sacrum in half, tore my shoulder in 3 places and felt like a semi ran over me 10 times. I did get back up in the stand 11 days later and killed 2 deer that day. I paid a heavy price, thank God I got them early. Sitting and climbing into the stand was brutal. Then try dragging a deer with your tail bone split in half. My wife was so mad at me I thought she'd never forgive me for that. But that was my vacation time and it was a good cold snowy day in the rut. I couldn't resist going out. Next time out was in mid January.
ooh man thankfully you survived that fall/injury and able to tell about it....its reason like this I only allow my 11yr Old Son to get in a set we have up around our lease with the Hunter Safety Lifeline....I have 2 sets with them, that way he is always connected somehow to the tree and I always climb up 1st...this may sound strange but I do everytime I go out but even more so when he is with me I Pray that 1st and foremost we are safe and come back home together....situations like what you just shared are scary to say the least...again glad you are still able to tell the story..
Yes, I am really lucky. Don't think I ever felt so much pain in my life, but I got up and walked out of there. My wife then drove me to the hospital and no one could believe I came out as good as I did.
I don't have any other way to describe this one...once I came up lame. Like if I was a horse they would have shot me. I have no idea what set it off but I just woke up with it. I had something wrong with my left hammy or hip flexor or groin. I could not take a full stride. Hurt like hell if I tried to take a normal walking stride. Happened on the second day of my Rutcation and lasted pretty much the full week. Also, when I was a kid I was helping my old man put up a treestand. He accidentally dropped his bow saw while up high and I instinctively put my hand up to shield myself and it laid the top of my left middle finger wide open. I was maybe 9 years old...still have that scar 30 some years later.
tell the truth now, you were probably acting up and your Dad threw the bow saw at you lol..... Just kidding
I know you were kidding but if I was really acting up that mean ol SOB would've used the back of his hand. Got a scar on my forehead to prove that one.
Hell yeah I agree now. Scar was from his ring; he wasn't trying to hurt me. I was 15. First and only time I took a swing at him. When I got back up I apologized. I love that mean old man, and he loves me.
We all get dinged up but the one painful thing that happens that pisses me off more than another is the dreaded whip to the ear from a little branch.
I was pulling a deer up to skin him and part of the contraption snapped. My finger drilled into my right eye and I was blind for a minute or so. It hurt like hell and effected my vision for a few days. Yeah, that sucked.
Ouch.... not hunting related but kinda close. A few years ago I was placing a tarp over my Jon Boat and had a bungee cord that I thought was in place on the 1 side and when I pulled it, it came loose and literally hit me smack square under my eye and tip of my nose.... knocked me down and I rolled around on the ground like a kid throwing a tamper but only I was in pain... You since then I do not use bungee cords...
Ooooh, yeah that's a bad one. Reminds me of a side-bar line of thought- I hate walking through the woods behind someone who doesn't have the courtesy to warn you that stick is cocked and ready to whip back.
I used to get a tongue lashing when I would skip a morning of school to go pheasant hunt with my buddies. This was back in high school.
