Well I setup youth hunt this weekend in MI. I bought two ladder stands for the kid and with the help of my game camera's, I setup him up for a kill this weekend.

Well he got a shot at the below buck. This is the first deer the kid has seen ever from a deer stand. He hit it high and got about 6'' of penatration. All muscle blood for sure, but it appeared to be spined. His Dad was in the tree with him and why they did not pumped another arrow is beyond me. The Dad gets down and gets within 5 ft of the buck, he is thrashing and pretty pissed off from what I was told. He has a knife, but did not bring the kid or the bow, again I don't know why. He went back to the tree and waited, they heard thrashing for a few more minutes and then nothing.

They called me and we went to where they last saw the buck. We fond a bit of blood, but nothing else. He was in some thick brush, we should have seen where crawled out, but we fond nothing.

My question is could he have stunned the buck, he lost tempory use of his hind legs? Has anyone witness this or see it happen before?

I've never seen it personally, but I have heard from sources that I would believe that a deer can recover from a spine shot and regain use of their legs. I don't know what the survivability is, but it can happen.

I hope you guys can find him when it gets light out.

I am going to float the river.

We found a piece of bone where he was hit, I did see a set of eyes about 200 yds out in the CRP when I first go out there. I watch it for about 5 mins, I thought it was him, I ran out there, but the eys's disappeared into the CRP.

Well I have been looking all morning and found diddle. No sign, no deer.

I am of the belief he stunned the deer and pinched a nerve. Where that deer crawled to is where we last so sign of the deer. The spot he last saw him from 5 ft away, there is no sign the deer "crawled" out. Some how that buck got back on his feet.

That sucks !! I am surprised the dad didn't have him put another arrow in the buck.

Is the broadhead still in him??

I've spined a couple over the years but can't tell you if they would have got back up from shock wearing off or what ever. I've always immediately put another arrow in them to finish them.

I've seen pictures of a buck that someone shot... where they found an old broadhead stuck in the back bone. He was walking fine when they shot him. Anything is possible I guess.

Good luck. Hopefully if he is still walking... you catch him on your trail cam soon.

Yeah I know, but this was the biggest Buck the dad had ever seen. He got a bit rattled I think,

This buck home range was oour farrm for sure. I seen his rubs and his travel route today. I don't think he will stick around, but we can only hope.
