Over the years I have compiled a list of animals I'd like to hunt/fish before I hang it up. What's yours? Mine: Silka deer with a bow Newfoundland/Labrador Moose any means Alaskan Halibut Hog with a bow This may sound wierd and controversial but it's my list, Harp Seal the old fashion way
I've changed my outlook on this some..... I used to say I wanted to "take" the animals on my list. My outlook, now......is just having pursued them will suffice. I'm more into the "how", now...... In no particular order.......and for many particular reasons..... 1. Elk 2. TX hog/javelina hunt 3. DIY sheep hunt....................somewhere 4. Don't have a heart attack....but a ML hunt for a wolf. 5. I want to hunt African plains game with my recurve. Nothing really dangerous. Honestly....doesn't matter what I hunt. I'd love to bring home "A" shoulder mount (momento). But I don't care if I kill 1, 2 or 10. That's not why I want to go. It's less and less the critter....and more and more (as I bowhunt longer) about the experience/people.
Most of this list isn't bow only. Elk, moose, pronghorn & some of the plains game yes, but after that....handguns, shotguns & rifles would also be acceptatble to me Elk Bear Moose Hogs/Javalina Pronghorn Gator African Plains game Cape Buffalo (African or Austrailian) Red stag in new zealand Rio & merriams turkey(and I suppose if I am going to go that far, throw in Osceolas) I also want to trout fish out west. I think fishing for char up in canada would be cool. Salmon fishing anywhere, alaska or the pacific northwest Probably also try a bass/pike trip to canada If I could end up with pursuing at least 6 more off the critter list (besides Elk) & 2-3 off the fish list, I'd be really happy.
im assuming you mean by any means not just by bow? however im with GMMAT when he says "is just having pursued them will suffice". 1.Elk 2.Kodiac Bear 3. Moose 4, Red Stag 5. Axis Deer 6. Dall Sheep 7. Hog with my bow, have taken several with dogs, rifle, live trap. there are lots more but this will do for now.
Maybe sometime in 2011 we could make the TX hog hunt happen. I'm currently trying to get on a lease that has a healthy population of hogs, I have permission to hunt there for hogs when its not deer season till i get on. ill see if i cant get some trail cam pics from my buddy who is a member and has a trail cam set up.
eastx.....thank you. Greg (txjourneyman) has invited me there, also. I'm gonna take you guys up on it, sometime. The reason I put it on my list is......I'd like to go do that trip with a doz or so friends (something similar to Will's CO destination). I'd also like to hunt that terrain/area of the US. I just wanna see it......and share what's usually considered (correct me if I'm wrong, please) a low-key/low-pressure type hunt with a group of good people. Spot and stalk would be something totally new to me. Thanks, again.
the way we do it most of the time is ride till we see fresh sign, turn the dogs loose, corner them up and wade in and do live catch unless the hog is too big then we shoot it with our pistols. personally i carry a .45 long colt or a .357 mag. then sometimes we sit on the stand and let them come to the feeder and shoot them then, either way its fun i promise that, and it is low key/ low pressure, just there to have fun and enjoy it, dont matter if we get anything or not, as a matter of fact last 2 times we have came back with nothing, the very last trip we had 2 hogs cornered and one was tearing up the dogs and in the process of trying to get to them quickly i fell in the creek when it was 40 with a wind blowing, managed to save the .357 but i got soaked and the hogs got away unfortantly. been sick as a dog the last week bc of it. LOL but as always we had fun, the other guys asked was i ok and after a few choice words and a yeah they laughed at me then helped me out.
Good stuff, Will...... I looked into a wild boar spot and stalk pkg. at a SC outfitter, last year. Everything sounded great.....until I got to the part (disclaimer) at the bottom of the page. **NOT FOR THE FAINT OF HEART!!! lol..... I'm not sure I'm above that threshold.....with few climbable trees on hand!
Here's my list: Elk Caribou Pronnghorn Mulie Black Bear Merriams, Rio, and Osceola turkeys African plains game African lion Sika deer I don't know if all of those will happen but is sure will be fun trying.:D
I can't believe I left mule deer off my list. That's definitely one I wanna try. The STYLE of hunting certain critters is what draws me. Take one or not.......I wanna hunt them a certain way......or not hunt them.
I was talking about this with my dad the other day. I said most people's bucket list consist of things all the things they want to do before THEY die. Mine however is a list of things that I want to make die. These would all be with archery tackle. Elk (Might be heading out for the first time in Sept.) Mule Deer Pronghorn Moose Black Bear Sitka Deer Caribou Hogs and just a plain old Turkey (Only my 3rd year turkey hunting this season. Killed 1 with a gun my first year, but struck out last year with the bow.)
Elk Red Stag Grizzly Bighorn Sheep Mule Deer Caribou. African game has never really interested me from a hunting standpoint for some reason.
I've been lucky to pursue and tag several of the animals that were on my list originally. I've Elk hunted twice, killed 2 Bulls both calling, and spot and stalk. I've taken 5 Mulie Bucks, 2 by spot & stalk and 3 out of a blind 1 Antelope out of a blind at a waterhole. This hunt really tested my patience! I've taken Eastern, Rio, & Merriam Turkeys Calling both in and out of a blind. The Blind is a huge advantage. 7 Black bears all over bait If I were to add to this list it would probably be as follows. Caribou Moose Maybe Sitka Deer, Osceola turkey, & hogs I know it's to each their own but I have never had any desire to hunt Africa. If I went I'd have to mortgage my taxidermy bill, and then still would not have a place to display everything. Are there other game I'd like to hunt? I am sure there is, but either time, or $$ would make it not feasible for me. I would honestly be content hunting the rest of my years in Southern IL chasing P&Y Whitetail Bucks. Although I hope to Chase more big Mulie Bucks, and Monster Black Bears in the years ahead. I hope everyone is able to realize their dreams!! Remembering back when I was just a boy chasing cottontails with my recurve, I can still remember dreaming of someday arrowing a Whitetail. At the time that seemed like a tough accomplishment, but I've done it dozens of times over. :-) Dan
Man my list would be endless , but hear are my ambitions 1 Elk 2 Mulie 3 Hog/Javalina 4 Rocky Mountain BigHorn Sheep and Stone Sheep 5 Antelope 6 Whitetail = Buck 7 Red Deer , Roe Deer , Sika Deer , Fallow Deer , Chinese water Deer = All rifle and in UK . I have no interest in African hunting at all , British and American Big Game all the way ..... Down the line , New Zealand and Australia .
All with bow... 1.Stone Sheep 2. Dall Sheep 3. Bighorn Sheep 4. Desert Bighorn 5. Sitka Blacktail 6. Caribou 7. Mountain Goat .. In no particular order
Oh where do I begin? If it hunts back, then I want to hunt it. If it has fangs, antlers, and/or horns, I want to hunt it. If it can be had while I'm sharing among friends, then I want to hunt it. If it's easy, then I do not want to hunt it-at least not that way. I think that about covers it.
There are a few things that are always making me want to load up my bow and head down the road. Elk (CO or NM) Some sort of mountain sheep Fly fish for trout in Montana A few wild hogs in between
