I went out and bought an AMS arrow. I will be making my own real system out of some PVC pipe, foam wrap, and screwed into my stabilizer. What I want to know is what line to use. Is there something at the hardware store that will work? Some small diameter nylon line work? How much do I need to use?

The stuff I see that comes with hand wrap reels is usually 80lb braided nylon or dacron line. If I were buying some I'd try to get 100 lb braided dacron. How much depends on how much your homemade reel can hold. You won't need more than 25 yards in any case.

The thing to watch for with hand-wrap reel line is ..... DO NOT USE HIGH LB STRETCHY/SPRINGY LINE. Because if it doesn't feed off the reel right and gets hung up.... the arrow is going to snap back and get you.

High test dacron/spectra line isn't stretchy but too big of a diameter and it will mess with your arrow flight and it will tend to hang up on the reel.

Too light and you'll lose your arrow. Losing arrows is a notorious problem with hand wrap reels. The other issue is that it's really slow.

Most of us old-timers started out with the hand wrap reels and none of us miss them. ;)

Good luck with yours!! It's certainly a step up from no bowfishing.

After looking at prices I think I'm going to take back the arrow I got and get a Allen kit.

You really want to save money, buy the AMS retriever kit. Reel, rest two arrows and you're ready to fish. AND you'll skip all the hassels you are about to experience with a hand wrap reel.
(I know, I know, I read your screen name but I just have to tell you)

    hah :)

I ordered the Cajun kit. I need to save the money because I've been out of work for a real long time and just want to shoot a bow at some big carp. If I really enjoy doing it and after work picks back up I'll probably get a nice setup.
