What factors do you guys/gals think limits your success the most in the field?...stand entry and exit routes? not playing the wind? luck? being ill prepared?
Seat time, I have only been hunting for 3 years total and bow hunting for 1 year total - knowledge and seat time are the two greatest factors for me. From what I have learned so far, knowledge is power in the woods and I just don't have a lot of it. I can read books and forums all I want - at the end of the day you learn from each experience in the woods. When you don't start hunting until 23 years old then you have a pretty big learning curve.
1. I'm an idiot 2. I get a little agressive sometimes. Sometimes good... sometimes not so good 3. cant stay out of honey holes until time is right (getting better though) 4. I hunt too much lol
I've been sloppy with the wind in the past. I drive 25min to my hunting ground and find out the wind is no good, I would hunt anyway and regret it. So, I bought a climber. Problem solved. Still have my other stands this just adds to my flexibility.
Finding the bedding areas has always been a major problem for me. Then there is trying to play the wind and entry/exit which is also tough for me. Biggest factor is finding TIME!!!!
Not getting enough time to actually spend in the woods. That whole 'family' and 'work' stuff seems to always get in the way Hoping to drag my wife out with me a few times this season and if I can peak her interest a bit it might allow me some more hunting in the future (fingers crossed).
getting impatient and walking around trying to still hunt like an idiot, and not hunting the wind mess up my spots.
This is my biggest problem. I find beds from time to time, but I don't think these areas are strictly bedding areas. It's tough deciphering in the "big woods" I hunt..
Fighting the mainstream mindset that pressured mature bucks are brilliant creatures smarter than humans, pressured mature bucks will tailwind into the wind so set up with the wind hitting you in the face and believing in every gimmicky item or scent in a bottle I've bought over the years.
PATIENCE IS A VIRTUE...and one many don't or can't follow because you get too damn antsy sitting in a tree all day!
I like to kill deer. I have a hard time holding out when dumb deer walk under and around me. That begin said my vote is with patience and fear. Patience for obvious reasons. Fear; I think a lot of guys are just afraid to try something "off the books" to kill a big mature deer.
Entry routes for sure. Really sucks when you have only one end of the property to enter. In order to get to the back of the property, I have to walk the entire thing and stink it all up. I'm sure plenty of deer have hit my scent trail, and turned around laughing their butts off!
Both my properties are set up for south winds.. so most of the time i can't play the wind but i take scent control seriously.. I know i'm just hoping to get lucky
Lack of mature bucks in general. Properties that arent good for a W or SW wind which we have 95% of time Time on stand
