I ate the last of my '08 veni, earlier this week. I guess I needed the motivation of having any empty freezer. I headed out to my Outlet Crossing stand this after noon, after we got back from church. Beautiful calm day compared to the wind yesterday. By the time I got the my stand and gear packed into the canoe, and paddled across the lake, it was about 1:00. About 10 minutes after getting set up, two does skirted the beaver dam on the opposite side (52 yds away). I watched them drink and slowly make their way down the lake shore. After they wandered off there wasn't any action until 4:15ish. A lone Doe made its way from my weak side. Came down to the waters edge, drank and fed behind some pines for about 10-15 minutes. Once I could tell she had no one in tow, I decided to take her. She eventually made her way towards the beaver-dam crossing. Just as she stepped out from behind the pines, she paused and started to turn (1/4ed away). I drew anchored and let one fly. About 3/4 of the way there my arrow deflected off a branch I didn't see. Thwack! As she spun back towards the direction she came from, my heart sank. I could see my arrow buried about 6" in her ham. She bounded for 15 yards and miraculously stopped with her vitals in the one (12") opening that I have on that whole side. In about 4 seconds, I nocked an arrow, drew, anchored and fired. 27 yds. She busted brush for about 40 yds and crashed. It all happened so fast, I couldn't believe it. I got down after 15 min and headed to the canoe to drop off some gear and get my light and knife. I waited another 20 min, then tracked her. Turns out, "she" got the last laugh... 1 1/2" spikes greeted me as I walk up on him. Damn! Still meat for the freezer, and I'm still pumped, just bummed to take the little guy out. I should have known since he was all by himself. So... here's my fresh meat! Here's the ride Back in the Old Town.... And a couple from the beach..... I'm beat. But now I know what I'm doing tomorrow. Can't wait to get him cut up and in the freezer!
Congrats on a fine kill. When they grow spikes like that they are the hardest to tell in my opinion. I think it is easier to see a button head that a spiker like that. Those things hide behind the ears so easily. Again, conrats on the kill and he will eat fine.
Sometimes it doesn't go the way you pictured it but it is still a deer on the ground. I went through the same exact thing last year. Congrats again!
Way to go, Fitzy!!!! That'll eat real nice!! I have never seen spikes that small before ... lol ... the deer looks to be a 1.5 year old ... maybe he is an inch per year :D
LIL Devil indeed :D fitting name. Hey like you said, its meat for the freezer. I also did that one time. but congrats man!!
Thanks guys! I got him all butchered up today. Had his tenderloins for dinner. Mmmmmm... Here's my luck, on the way back in from registering my deer in town I saw Count Chocula in the middle of our driveway!! He stood for a second then bolted right up the ridge towards one of my stands.... it was 12:05.... Good grief... Here his is a couple weeks ago by my garden... He's really been messing with me since last Nov!
