Is it worth it for the extra 50-60 bucks for a G42 vs a mpe5?

    DLC Covert

    2012 Red 40 $119.99 shipped

I too think 3 years is about the average life span of a trail camera

If was to take in in for the winter to avoid the -30 degree temps, and then put it back out in march or april would that help the life of the camera? or does it not seem to make a difference. Do better models last longer?

When storing cameras just be sure to take the batteries out

It depends. If you want pics only probably not. The Stealth will do HD videos with sound and its pics are 10MP compared to the Covert's 6MP. The Covert has a 45 foot flash range and the Stealth's claim 100ft but I'd guess it is more like 60ft. The Stealth also has Time Lapse which the Covert MPE5 does not.

You can set the camera to take a pic every 5 sec, 10 sec, 30 sec, 1 minute Etc. I have Time Lapse on my cams and never use it mainly because it eats up battery life.

If you go with the mind set that anything over 2 years is a bonus, you will be fine.

Tell yourself that it's an electronic device that you hang on a tree in the heat & humidity and then in frozen conditions. Add to that a few lightning storms. They will not last forever.

Will it wreck your camera if you store it all winter with the batteries in it?

It can. The batteries can get corroded which in turn will eat away the stuff the batteries are touching.

I found one of my Dad's old trail cams this weekend in a drawer. It's a wildview xtreme2 from atleast 2005 but with enough tinkering I finally got it to work with a 128MB card. It's averaging about 300KB a pic so I can get roughly 430 pictures from it. I was so pumped that I drove 25 minutes out to the land to set it up. In my shear excitement I forgot to put the cover over the batteries, but they are still inside the weather sealed panel and should be fine. It took two pics as I was leaving, hopefully it works and I can get some pics from the MR site I put up.
