These pictures are from western Virginia, taken over an active scrape. At least 4 times within about a month, small bucks stood on their hind legs to get at the licking branch. Anyone else ever seen this?

HUNT IT! Yes, I have seen this type of behavior before (but I'm old - :o). Is that a ground blind in the background?

Nice, I have something like 200 pics from last fall of bucks doing the same thing. One of my favorite spots to setup a trail cam.

Great for pictures but terrible to hunt over for me. Never in daylight.

Generally always happen at night.. Looks like you need a lower licking branch.

Deer use it as a communication tactic.

Gltomp, I'm no spring chicken either. What you see in the background is the root system from a blow down. I didn't find this scrape until I had to leave in Nov, so I only hunted it some in Dec after the rut activity had pretty well quieted down.

For the rest of you guys, out of 316 pictures from mid Nov to mid Dec, there was only 1 mature buck that passed through during the daylight hours. Almost all of the activity occurred at night. So, you are definitely right about the lack of daytime activity.

Get the licking branch lower. I have had good luck w daytime mature bucks using licking branches in Wisconsin. Usually the last week of October

90% of my licking branch activity is at night too. But I did have mature bucks use them in the daylight during November
