so, in my quest for the minutia about archery gear and appropriate situations I'm curious where different sights are appropriate... you know, target vs. hunting vs. 3d vs. spots... what type of site do you use for each and what type of site SHOULD we be using for those situations... how does the situation dictate which type of sight you should use?? why would you not use a target site for hunting for instance?? granted, most of us can only afford one rig so we tend to gear it up for hunting specifically, but does that mean we suffer when we're in 3d or target situation?? fwiw - i only have a hunting rig with a G5... maybe in the future I may have an additional league rig, but.... that remains to be seen... what's says y'all
Im not sure. I was asking the same question at the pro shop. The answer I recieved was that a target sight is in the way more simply because its longer and at normal shooting distances in the woods, i.e. 15-30yds, that kind of accuracy simply isnt needed. Thats just concerning the target sights for hunting. I dont know much about what is better. They have that hindsight wich looks all right but Ive also seen the red dot scopes, pendulum and actual scoped lense sights. No idea whats best just know that taking your groups from 1" to 2" at 20yds by eliminating 4in of sight off the front of your bow is ok. Especially if your "brushed in" real good and can catch on things easily.
I like using a middle of the road sight (between a full on hunting sight, and a comp sight. I like a dovetail mount (not necessary for hunting, but nice to have when target shooting), 4 pins (keeps you legal in HC shoots), and micro-adjustments. If you're going to hunt and shoot 3D, these types of sights (Viper, CJ, Sword, etc) are a great all around compromise. Some don't like the length of a dovetail mount for hunting, but in reality, you can adjust it back in so it's not protruding near as much if it's a concern. The micro-adjustable features some might not find necessary for hunting, but I prefer the precision of it over traditional adjustment. 4 pins is all you will ever need in the whitetail woods (and in most cases, MORE than you will need), but it allows you plenty to work with for the yardages you will encounter in the HC of a 3D shoot.
for a hunting rig I kinda figured 4 pins would be plenty, you simply don't get longer shots than 50yds and likely wouldn't be able to take 'em if you did get a shot at that range... kind of what prompted this was when Rick James was helping me do some initial setup on the my bow friday eve at the GTG... the complaint I was having was that I didn't have enough vertical adj range on my sight and it didnt look I could flip the mount around... i wouldn't have been against a new site to get the adjustment range I needed, but it got me thinkin about sites in general... RJ had a nice Axcel site he brought (but apparently was forbid to use, hehe) and it looked like he had all the adjustment range anyone could ever possibly want not to mention that it didn't seem outrageously long... granted, I didn't see it mounted on a bow so it was just a casual observation... but mostly I just wanna get that info in my head to process... its an unfortunate thing for me that I have this strange need to have more knowledge about subjects/hobbies than I'll ever practically use or require in 99.9% of situations... :D
I have used a number of different sight styles and brands. A scope is not legal nor is an electronic device i.e. red dot or laser in my state of Washington. I favor adjustable pins (.010 for precision aiming) and have settled on the wrapped (for brightness of pins in the deep woods), with the variable light (for bright, high contrast situations), dove tail rail mounted (for removal during travel), Hogg It (for durability and incomparable fineness and range of adjustment). Yeah, it sticks out there (I even went to the eight inch extension so I could see the entire sight aperture in my oversized peep) but not any further than my twelve inch B-Stinger stabilizer. Certainly it doesn’t stick out any farther than were I to have an arrow nocked. Repeatable adjustment and range of adjustment along with fineness of aiming were my priorities in this latest choice. I’ll never go back to another brand again. Oh, 99% of my shooting is done at targets.
Here's my deal. Target: 8x scope 3D: 3x scope Hunting: 5 pins 8x is too powerful for 3d for the same reason a 9 power scope is too much on a rifle at 30 yards; all you see is hair when you draw up and you can't tell where you are on the target. The reasons not to use a scope for hunting become real apparent real fast if you've ever had one in the field under varying light. If you get sun glare off the lens you can't find the target. Hunting sights up here are all about durability and if it's sticking out too far and the fiber optics aren't FULLY protected they're hosed, and consequently so is your hunt.
I don't mean to pick, but if you are "brushed in" to the point that 4 inch of sight makes a difference, it's possible you may be too "brushed in.":d Just like using a 36inch ATA bow vs a 31 inch ATA bow. Out of a treestand, I've never been limited by the extra 2.5 inches on either end. Sights. I use Viper Predator MicroTune with a combo of .019 pins and .010 pins, this doesn't change for me between 3D and hunting. I don't really need 5 pins to hunt, but I like to practice at distance with my hunting rig.
I shoot in the "Hunter" class in everything that I do. Therefore I use my same hunting rig for everything, including indoor stuff.
The same goes for me to, Hunter class for me also. currently Sword twlight hunter sights for me. I shoot five pins for 3-D but, rely on 2-3 pins during the season. I had Copper John dead nuts sights before the swords, and they fit the same bill!! Did you ever fully recover from the G2G yet?? :d just askin :d
Me as well. I have been shooting 3D in the Hunter class with my hunting setup. I do see in the future me dropping some money on a 3D specific bow, but until that time comes I'll shoot with what I have. Currently I have a 3 pin sight on my bow, but have ordered a 5 pin. I feel confident that I won't be shooting any deer here in GA at 50 or 60 yards but I would like to practice out there to improve my 40 yard shooting.
i seriously think he was talkin to me, and ya, i was fine by about 2p the next day... after I got home and showered and rehydrated a little
Not you Dub, i already know how you bounce back :d It was directed at the mag :d speaking of rehydrating, if you guys noticed, i like to throw in some water when im drinking so i dont have to do it the next day
