What are you shooting and why? First I'll state that I'm really interested in something lightweight. We cover a LOT of ground where I hunt up north, and there are days that I can do 10+ miles. I'm not terribly interested in a 9lb+ gun that can flatten deer at 300 yards. I'm mostly interested in some of the newer short/light more compact guns like the new 6lb Accura ML or the Knight Ultra Lite. I figure if I can top something like this off with a 2.5-8x36 VX3 it will be all the muzzleloader I'll ever need. What do you guys like and why? I have some experience with a 10y/o cheapo traditions inline that I have now (rusted terribly), so I'm not completely new to ML's just not terribly familiar with what's new. When I bought that gun, everyone was shooting 777 and power belts.
THIS!!!!! Easy to load, clean, carry and shoot! It's lethally accurate! I shoot 245 powerbelts and only use 100 grns, never saw the need on the range to shoot 150. I could be wrong though. Either way I love this gun!!!!
CVA Accura V2. The gun shoots better than me and holds/fits nicely. I have been covering a lot of miles in the past wekk and a half and I have never gotten tired of carrying it. After getting it and sighting in I was so pumped from shooting it that I couldn't wait for early ML. I have probably been out as much with the ML as I have been bowhunting this year. I don't have a scope, I got the fibre sights because I wanted to use it for close in still hunting. I love bowhunting but I wanted to go with a completely different style and this ML fills that need. I just love shooting/carrying this gun. I'll probably do some shooting with it between the end of firearms (Saturday) and the beginning of late ML. The breech plug screws out with my fingers and the gun breaks down easily to clean.
We use nothing but magnum ml. Believe it or not, the cheap cva wolfe are really accurate. This was the gun my son killed his doe with at 143 yards this year. I sighted it in 2" high at 100 and it grouped extremely well with powerbelts. Here is the kicker , we use 41 gr of pistol powder ( if interested i can find out what kind) we have shot 1000's of rounds like this. Use only breakover magnums if using smokeless. I have a TC Encore. It shoots great and is pretty light. But the one thing I hate about it is the lever that opens the breech is on the trigger gaurd and if you use a sling, it digs into your back something terrible. Apparently the engineer never carried it on his back. I have an older model and it needs a tool to remove the breech plug. The new models you can pull the plug by hand. This would be a big improvement too.
Sorry, T but I am going to STRONGLY advise everyone to NOT use mindless powder in their ML unless it is the one that is designed for it! DON'T DO IT!
Anyone have or handled the Accura MR (Mountain Rifle)? Im completely comfortable and confident with it in a breakover magnum only. Dont try it in anything else. Sent from my DROIDX using Tapatalk 2
Looks like they lowered the weight from the V2 by making the barrel shorter by 2 inches. One pound difference in weight and a shorter barrel look like the only difference bewteen the two. Other than that, if it shoots like the V2 then you can't go wrong with it.
I have a wolf magnum also. It's a fantastic gun and great price. Toss a nice big scope on it and it's a machine. My neighbor and I are consistently shooting to 125 yards.
Most of my muzzleloader hunting is done from stand so I use fairly heavy guns like the Knight Long Range Hunter. It is deadly accurate to 250 yards and probably beyond. But, it is too heavy for the type of hunting you are doing. On the other hand, I bought my boys a youth Rossi .50 cal a few years ago and it may be as accurate or more accurate than any other muzzleloader I own. It will shoot as well as most of my high-powers at 100 yards. It is small, lightweight and perfect for carrying all day. I usually load it up and throw it over my shoulder for a second quick shot from stand. It was very inexpensive, but it will shoot better than some guns that cost several times what it did. I would also recommend taking a look at Blackhorn 209 powder. I have tried them all, and it is the best to date. Good luck and enjoy the fun of muzzleloading.
Goex FFF and a patched round ball out of a flinter will put a smile on your face EVERY time you shoot it....just sayin!
I'm old... I don't like to walk far... I can carry a heavy gun if I can walk. I have an Omega with a nice scope that shoots as well as my Remington 30-06. You want light... don't buy mine. Mine is an oldie unscrew the breech plug and all that. I load it with 150 grains with 292 power belts and kill anything it aims at.
I used to do that until I went to shoot and it just went SNAP! Stupid nipple was clean too!! I still have the gun, it's an old TC octagon barrel.
Ok, so you like the Rossi? I have been looking at a Rossi rifle in .308, and you can get interchangable barrels and forends for it. I was thinking about getting the Muzzleloader setup.
I use the Triple 7 stuff, works great! I am also shooting the CVA Wolf and I love it, very light, easy to carry and clean. The breech plug screws right out and easy to clean. I use all the TC cleaning stuff. This was a hand-me-down from my Father-in-law and I love it!
Love the Rossi. Break open type gun that is easy to remove the plug and clean and the one I have really does shoot incredibly well. If you are already looking at it for the .308, it would be a natural to go ahead and get the muzzleloader barrel. Here is a picture of it laying on a giant bodied buck that my son killed with it using 60 grains of pyrodex pellets and a 230 grain(?) hornady bullet. We just limited his shots to 75 yards or less. It has continued to shoot well with higher volumes of powder and bigger bullets as my sons grew.
