Thanks and not a problem Greg. It was listed for $1299, after taxes it was just about $1400. More than I wanted to spend, but this guns MSRP was over $1600 and has a lot of features and components that are usually on guns in the $2500-$3500 range. It was too sexy to pass up.

New York is not the entire North.

Michigan is a "shall issue" state. "Shall issue" means if you don't have a criminal record, your CPL is automatic. I took the course before I turned 21, got fingerprinted and turned in the application as soon as I did and had my CPL less than three weeks later. It's not restricted to any particular gun. I can carry any handgun I wish.

Michigan also follows the castle doctrine and you are not required to retreat if you are in public. You are also immune to civil liability if you use your gun in self-defense or in defense of your family.

Michigan will also honor a CPL from any other state if you are a resident of that state.

Open carry is also legal although I can't figure out why anyone would do so.

Some of us see open carry as important because it allows the other side to see "Joe Blow" doing normal, everyday things with his family, just like everyone else, but that particular "Joe Blow" happens to be carrying a pistol.

Many times, people will come up and talk to me about my pistol and it allows me to be a "good ambassador" for the second amendment. Just my .02

    Exactly.
When you see me out around town, you'll see my trusty Springfield on my hip. Hadn't got a negative comment yet but get plenty of positive comments, especially from the local law enforcement.

A quick update for those of you that followed this. I got approved for a restricted sportsmans permit last week Wednesday. I went to the shop and of course got delayed on the NICS check. Today was the day they couldn't delay past on the NICS check so almost 6 months to the day I finally got my first handgun. In a year I can reapply to have my restrictions removed to a full concealed permit and I already can't wait. And finally a pic of the new toy.......

Wow! That is quite the process. I filled out a conceal and carry app...sent it in...within a couple weeks I got my license in the mail. I went to the store, filled out my paperwork for the background check...and 2 days later I was a gun owner. The whole process was about a month. Good to hear you finally got it! Congrats!

    Nice!
So it was 6 months before you could even bring the gun home? Or did I read that wrong?

You read it right rybo. In NY each county does it differently, but in my county you have to have a handgun serial number to put on the application in order to start the permit application process. It's the permit process that takes 6 months. They won't give you a permit unless there is a handgun on the permit, and each handgun you own must be listed on the actual permit card you carry. Most people will purchase a handgun before they turn in the app so the serial number can be put on the app, and then the local gun store will hold the gun until the permit process is completed. After you get your permit, you can get ammendments made to add guns quite easily, I go to the gun store and buy the gun, they give me the receipt, I run to the County Clerk's office where they ammend my permit to include the new guns serial number, then I can go pick up my pistol.

NY pretty much sucks when it comes to gun laws, taxes, or anything else to do with it's state/county/local government, but I've got too much family here right now to consider leaving.

And by the way.....I'm like a kid in the candy store with all the toys and accessories you can buy for these 1911's. There are almost as many add ons for these as there are for AR's. I've already ordered a 25lpi checkered Ed Brown main spring housing to match the factories checkered front strap and a half dozen Wilson ETM magazines. :)

Man, reading what some of you went through just to get a carry permit is insane. I took an 8 hour class, shot my pistol, the guy who taught the class sent in our paper work and about 3 weeks later I had the permit in hand. Not to mention I can walk in to my gun shop of choice with anything I want and take it home that day makes this place better all the time. Here is a pic of my daily carry. I picked it up for $325.00 and did some work on it........Blake

A quick update for those of you interested........

I've got about 500 rounds through her now in two shooting sessions. I've fired about 450 Sellier & Bellot 230gr FMJ's, along with some Hornady TAP 200gr +P's, and some Buffalo Bore 230gr +P's.

The first shooting session, the gun ran flawlessly for about 100 rounds while I was using Wilson ETM's. I decided to try the factory magazines to see how they would operate, ended up with one fail to eject on the last round the very first time I tried the magazine. I also had a pair of Wilson 47D's that I picked up, and one of them produced a handful of issues where it failed to feed properly on the last or second to last round. I tossed those magazines and have since had about 300ish flawless rounds using the Wilson ETM's. I wish they were a little lower profile, but they function perfect, so they will have to do for now, I'll likely look for something else lower profile that feed well before I start to carry this thing.

The gun is WAAAAY more accurate than I am. I pretty much suck at this handgun shooting thing. On a bench with a rest, I can keep them all well under 4" at 25 yards, but I'm pretty sure the gun has more in it than I can deliver. Off hand, we have a bunch of swinging metal targets that are about 4" around at camp and I'm able to hit them at 20 yards maybe 4-5x out of 8. One of the guys at camp is a cop with a lot of handgun experience, and he can hit those metal targets pretty much every time at the same distance while shooting pretty fast. I did shoot a group at 40 yards one time as well while sitting down and resting my arms on my knees, and was able to keep all 8 rounds pretty well inside a 10" circle.

I did order the Ed Brown main spring housing so the back would be checkered. My buddy that builds guns at the Dan Wesson factory offered to bring me to the factory and he would blend the new housing into another unfinished frame so that it fits a bit better. I'm hoping to get this done this upcoming weekend then I'll have to send it off to get recoated to match.

Overall, I'm very happy with the gun and for anyone wanting a higher end 1911 without the custom pricetag, I'd absolutely suggest you at least look at a Dan Wesson.
