How important is food in your life? Do you consider food just sustenance/energy for the day? Or do you consider food an enjoyment/pleasure?

Do you actively seek to improve your cooking skills? Do you attempt new recipes often?

Do you schedule things around food? Are your family gatherings centered around food? How often do you have sit down, full family dinners?

How often do you go out for dinner? What do you consider "going out" for dinner? At what standard do you hold restaurants?

How open-minded are you when it comes to trying new foods/flavors?

Would you ever take a "food vacation"? When traveling out of town, do you research the best restaurants in the area?

I know it's a lot of questions, but I'm just curious as to how important food is in other parts of the country.

I'll answer the questions that interest me or I have an opinion on.

I do consider food as an enjoyment. Maybe too much.... ;)

When attending hunting camps..... the food is almost as equal to me as the hunt. I love eating good when hunting and camping. It is important.

We try and sit down for family dinner every evening. Most of the time we are able to.

Since I have two young children we don't go out to eat much. Once our children get a little older we probably will eat out 1-2 times a week. I consider it eating out if you paid for your food and someone else cooked it for you.

I would not take a vacation based solely on food. That doesn't mean I would not enjoy food greatly while on vacation.

How important is food in your life? Do you consider food just sustenance/energy for the day? Or do you consider food an enjoyment/pleasure?

Depends on mood, money and how busy I am. If I'm off doing volunteer stuff, I often forget to eat until I feel ill. However, when I'm at home, working.. I like to eat. (hence the fatness of myself) I do enjoy 'good' food. I'm just too damn poor to eat much more than chicken, eggs, fish (buffalo and carp) and veggies (from the garden) right now.

Do you actively seek to improve your cooking skills? Do you attempt new recipes often?
I'm a good cook but I prefer simple food. Grilled meat, broiled chicken, sauteed veggies.

Do you schedule things around food? Are your family gatherings centered around food? How often do you have sit down, full family dinners?
My mom is an awesome cook so usually she cooks if it's 'family'. A lot of my bowfishing friends and I get together and we eat together but we're talking a simple grilling of burgers/fish fry or a trip to Denny's. (there's not a whole lot of restaurants that will seat you when you smell of dead fish) Kendall leaves at 7am and gets home at 11pm. We don't have dinners 'cept for maybe on the weekend.

How often do you go out for dinner? What do you consider "going out" for dinner? At what standard do you hold restaurants?
I can't even remember the last time I ate at anything more than a greasy spoon diner. I used to hit much nicer restuarants but that's when I lived up in the city where there are tons of great eateries and I was making 3x the money. Now, eating out is stopping at the Hardees.

How open-minded are you when it comes to trying new foods/flavors?
I've willingly tried raw fermented squid (soaked in fish guts and such juices). ;) Pretty much the only things I won't eat now are sugary/starchy things.

Would you ever take a "food vacation"? When traveling out of town, do you research the best restaurants in the area?
When I went bear hunting in Maine, I added a couple extra days to my itinerary so I could drive down the coast and eat seafood. Unfortunately, I caught a massive cold and couldn't taste anything. :(
I don't research best restaurants. I try to places that specialize in local foods. (if they have any) When out of the country, I like to hit authentic food places. The little noodle joint in Japan, tacqueria in Mexico.. that kind of stuff.

I know it's a lot of questions, but I'm just curious as to how important food is in other parts of the country.

I found that I have to stay away from carbs almost completely or I blimp out. (even more blimpy than I am now) That really hammers my 'going out to eat' and is kind of awkward when I'm with people I don't really know. :D

Food is a necessity that I can't do without, besides some of it tastes really good.

How important is food in your life? Do you consider food just sustenance/energy for the day? Or do you consider food an enjoyment/pleasure?

Both...majority of the time as fuel and not pleasure. I absolutely love food though so it takes some discipline to eat what I know I should instead of what I want.

Do you actively seek to improve your cooking skills? Do you attempt new recipes often?

Yes and yes. More so than following recipes, I like to wing it and see what I can come up with.

Do you schedule things around food? Are your family gatherings centered around food? How often do you have sit down, full family dinners?

Not sure exactly what you mean by schedule around food, but I do try to eat every 2-3 hours depending on the day's activities. We have sit down meals when we can. I'd say 5-6 times a week.

How often do you go out for dinner? What do you consider "going out" for dinner? At what standard do you hold restaurants?

We go out to dinner about once a week. Anything we don't cook ourselves we consider "going out". Restaurants range from fast food to nice, sit-down restaurants. Usually depends on time and the kids.

How open-minded are you when it comes to trying new foods/flavors?

I'm pretty open-minded. I love trying new foods. Nothing like they used to eat on Fear Factor though. ;)

Would you ever take a "food vacation"? When traveling out of town, do you research the best restaurants in the area?

I wouldn't go on vacation just for food, but I definitely look forward to eating foods in other regions. I would be more excited about a trip if it was in a region where I am excited about the food.

    Lotta ?????
Food is VERY important to me. I enjoy eating good food.
We cook dinner almost every night. While not actively learning cooking skills, I do like to try different ways of cooking things. As far as going out, we go in bunches. We can go 2-3 months & not go anywhere, then take this last weekend when I went to dinner out 3 days straight.
When dining out, dependin on mood, I could go from anything from a nice local diner to a good steak house.
I don't usually look up restaurants before hand(I do look up bars & brew pubs) I will try and find out from locals where are the good places to eat. Couple weeks back on vacation we found 2 EXCELLENT places for dinner, pricey but so worth it.

How important is food in your life? Fairly Important

Do you consider food just sustenance/energy for the day? More to It then just that. Taste means more to me.

Or do you consider food an enjoyment/pleasure? Good tasting food to me Is a pleasure.

Do you actively seek to improve your cooking skills? You bet. Always willing to try something else and do better.

Do you attempt new recipes often? Not as often as I'd like.

Do you schedule things around food? Back 10 to 15 years ago every year In January after the deer seasons were over we'd all get together and have a heart and liver feed. 10 to 20 heart and livers cooked up and lots of beer drank.

Are your family gatherings centered around food? Nope unless fish frys count.

How often do you have sit down, full family dinners? Not as often as I'd like too. My job keeps me away from home allot.

How often do you go out for dinner? Once or twice a month I'll take the g/f out for supper without our daughter, she stays at grandma's then.

What do you consider "going out" for dinner? Stuff that's not fast food.

At what standard do you hold restaurants? A fairly high standard. Great service goes a long ways for me.

How open-minded are you when it comes to trying new foods/flavors? Not open minded enough. It seems It's either burgers or ribs for me. I need to expand my horizon.

Would you ever take a "food vacation"? Don't think so

When traveling out of town, do you research the best restaurants in the area? No

\How important is food in your life? Do you consider food just sustenance/energy for the day? Or do you consider food an enjoyment/pleasure?

    A little of both.

Do you actively seek to improve your cooking skills? Do you attempt new recipes often?

I used to, but I married a kickass chick that can cook anything.

Do you schedule things around food? Are your family gatherings centered around food? How often do you have sit down, full family dinners?

As often as time permits, but usually 2 or 3 times a week.

How often do you go out for dinner? What do you consider "going out" for dinner? At what standard do you hold restaurants?

Twice a month or so to sit down restaurants. Once a week for wings.

How open-minded are you when it comes to trying new foods/flavors?

    Getting better at that.

Would you ever take a "food vacation"? When traveling out of town, do you research the best restaurants in the area?

Not solely for vacation, but when I travel, I look for good places to eat.

I know it's a lot of questions, but I'm just curious as to how important food is in other parts of the country.

    Now see, I disagree.

I believe food (good food) should be about the experience. Now I'm not saying that every meal of your day should be an event, because that would just be absurd, but I believe that people should strive to challenge their senses when it comes to food. Try different textures, tastes, and smells. I think everyone should experience a truly great restaurant at least once in their life.

Would you consider these dishes "just food"?

Both of these dishes are from The Fat Duck in London, which since El Bulli closed, is considered the best restaurant in the world.

What do you think when you see food like this?

Who needs a bowl? All you need is jelly or syrup.
