Looks like I have alot of work ahead of me! It might sound funny, but ever since I started shooting my recurve I have this feeling of freedom that comes over me and I feel like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders. THE COMPOUND WAS BECOMING TO TECHNICAL AFTER YEARS OF SHOOTING. Don't get me wrong I will never give up my compound, but the recurve and traditional life is much more enjoyable!!! Switching to the stickbow is one of the best things I ever did!!!! :)

I started shooting bows about 4 years ago......never shot a compound before. i used to shoot 5-7days a week hours at a time. i kept trying all sorts of things at first....always worrying about my form (not that that is a bad thing) then one day i decided to not think about back tension, anchor, etc. and just pull the bow back and shoot. repetition is key and repitition is easy when you do what is natural. my form isn't the best i'm sure; but i can consistently repeat it over and over.

That's the key to shooting, right there. Find what works for you and do the same everytime.

I don't know if I could get these kinds ofgroups at 8-10 yards let alone the 20+ that you guys are.

Huge respect for being able to shoot like that.

Let's me know I've got a lot of work to do.

Thanks guys and I agree with what you have said and I will tell you why...I was shooting today for the first time at 20 yards and seeing that I'm new I was tring to get every thing perfect. Then by total accident I let one slip that I thought was bad even though it felt good. I knew how to repeat what I did so I did it again and again and guess what, it worked for me shot after shot. Thanks for the advice and I will post some photos as I go.

Anyone want to buy 2 custom TD longobows and a recurve real cheap? To exemplify my frustratin I just went and shot the worst groups of my life, I mean like 24" at 20 yards! I can shoot 3-4" groups with a compound at 60 yards and this is what I get with traditional gear... I've had it. Yep, you're probably right, next I'll be giving up on bowhunting for the rifle. I'm frustrated and pissed off!

Now you know you have to practice even more with trad gear than you do with a compound. [IMG][IMG]
How long has it been since you put in some real practice time with the trad bows?[IMG][IMG]

well the triplets were in a good mood yesterday right before dark so i grabbed my longbow and shot for a few mins. i started at 20 yds. my first 2 arrows hit the deer in the neck. so i put the bow down, grabbed the errant shots and started over. but this time i started at 10 yds like i'm supposed to. Shot 5 arrows and i could have pulled them out with one hand. moved back to 15 and then to 22yds and was satisfied with the groups so i took it inside.

its funny how those first few shots at 10 to 12 yds can set the pace for some good practice

Yeah I know. I can usually just pick them up and hold at least an 8" group though. I guess I've gotten soft and blind this winter. I'm over my tantrum and nothing ended up in the fireplace. Tomorrow's another day. We'll see what it brings. >>>--------->

My "groups" (LOL) are getting better. Heck, I took some shots at 22 yards yesterday and my horizontal groups were good for me, barely off the mark left to right. One arrow 6 inches high, one about an inch low, and the other 6 inches low. Those are my honest "groups" at about 20 yards. My groups for 10-12 yards are tightening up from 6-7 inches off on average to maybe 4-5 inches. I am happy from where I came from a month ago to where I am now. Just have to keep on praticing.

It takes some work doesn't It Brett? Most people who have never hunted with a traditional bow do not realize the time It takes to get proficient and stay proficient. Even when you get proficient It's nothing close to a slam dunk at close yardages with these traditional bows. Form Is such a critical part of where ones arrows end up going when you've got 100% of your draw weight lieing on your fingers. Every year when I pick up my recurve for the 1st time since last deer season I struggle right away with my shooting and form. It takes me a while to get my muscles back In tune. It sure feels rewarding though when things go real good.

Keep at It Brett, your doing fine!!

Steve, shooting with a recurve just feels right to me. I will be hunting with one in the near future. It takes a TON of work to shoot better. On some days I shoot better than others.....some days I cannot get a grip on what I am doing wrong. I shoot 10-12 inches off up and down, left and right, who knows, lol. I shoot some good groups then shoot some horrible groups. But on average, I am improving slowly but surely. It may sound funny but I was so happy with two groups of 4 arrows the other day from 10 yards. All four arrows were within 3 inches of the bullseye, two groups in a row. Then I went haywire and could not shoot worth a darn. If I were actually hunting with a recurve right now I would limit myself to 7 yards or less, maybe even 5.

I have the utmost respect for all of you guys that shoot traditional. It's something I likely will never do just simply to avoid what Kodiak is describing. Good luck fellas.
