I did some searches on past threads regarding shooting a fixed blade through mesh. There was a lot more discussion about how mechanical BH's work on mesh.

So I wanted to start a new thread regarding fixed blades. My plan is to use my Magnus 125grain 4 blade stinger BH. Does shoot through mesh work 100% of the time? Is this just something else to be concerned about? Consider I am totally ignorant in shooting through mesh. When I have hunted out of ground blinds before, I always had the windows down.

I just ordered a Ameristep Intimidator 2 blind and plan to hunt with my 3.5 year old who is very high energy so I wanted the best possible concealment. Thus I am considering keeping the windows closed but only if it will not affect accuracy. Otherwise I am talking about doing very small openings in the windows. My son being there is going to add a new challenge and this is how I hope to mitigate it.

Also, can you shoot through the mesh several times or do you have to replace it after each shot?

Here is my new blind. Should be arriving next week sometime.

the way i see it, if mechanicals shoot through them, i dont see why fixed wouldnt. i would actually figure it would work better. and as far as replacing the windows after the shot, i guess that would be determined by how badly it gets torn up. if you think it will take a few more, throw some more through it.

Well no question fixed blades would be better. But it is highly debated IF mechanicals work with reliability. If I shot a mechanical I would not shoot through mesh.

The question is, what about fixed? Do they work good enough? There is not much disscussion in past threads about this that I could find.

I would be too nervous to shoot through mesh - impact on arrow flight is too much!

That is excatly how I feel about it (right now). Hoping a bunch of people will start posting that it works great with a fix head with no problems.

I suppose I could do some testing myself. Just getting a feel for the masses.

Didn't Rancid Crabtree do a test about shooting through mesh a while back? I thought I remembered someone doing a test on it

GFY... I've shot lots of bh's through mesh. The majority of those were 4-blade stingers and slick trick mags. I killed numerous deer out of them, the longest shot was right at 40 yards and it hit where I held. I shot targets through the mesh a lot and at first I was skeptical but after lots of target shooting through the mesh, my worries were gone. I don't have have any concerns when shooting through mesh now.

See, this is what I am looking for. :woot:

    New hope!!:nana:

Tell me Dubs, do you have to replace the mesh after each shot? If not, is there a concern you will hit the same spot twice? It's not cheap to replace from what I see.

FTR, I would test my set-up before shooting at an animal.

Same here why would you want to chance any interference at all.
In all fairness though I have never attempted to shoot through mesh.

I have shot Muzzy 4 Blade 90 grain heads thru mesh with no effect at all. If your bow is well tuned the arrow won't even know its there. I do make sure the mesh is stretched pretty tight tho. I don't want it loose and floppy.

You can shoot dozens of arrows thru the mesh without replacing it. Plus you can switch it out with windows you haven't shot thru.

Which blind are you currently using John and Dubs? I'm going to have to use a blind if I want to Turkey hunt and film at the same time this coming spring.

I have one just like the one pictured in this post and an ASAT Blind that looks very similar to that one also.

I literally got 100's of shots through the mesh before it was placed. I'm with John, I definitely wanted it stretched as tight as I could get it... this also helps with seeing through it.

I shot through Double Bulls and an Eastman blind mostly.

Thanks! I think I will practice shooting through one window and prove to myself it does not affect flight. Then change the mesh before I take it out and hunt.

The only other problem I see is I assume the mesh may affect my filming. But that is secondary right now.

Filming through the mesh is pretty tough... no doubt about that.

Does a range finder work through mesh? I have the Nikon Prostaff 550.

I have shot lots through the mesh with muzzy's and it has had zero effect on the arrow flight. You will not get as good of footage with a camera through the mesh. Some blinds are now designed with small openings below the windows for cameras. A couple of my buddys that film hunts have them. Also, my Nikon range finder works well through the mesh. Some brands and models will not.
