This is a hunting site that has a Water Cooler section of the forum for talking about whatever anyone wants to that isn't hunting related. No rules are being broken here. Fact is, this is a current topic that is shaping our country and the people in this thread are having a civil discussion about it. No one is forcing anyone to open a topic they don't care to see or talk about. Its not hard to not click on a topic you don't have any interest in. If I see a topic about ballet dancing, I skip it. Its easy.
It's the 'off-season' for most folks here. We can't talk nitty-gritty bowhunting all the time. There's sports, politics, fashion and home decorating to keep us amused. :D I don't think there's anything wrong with discussing views on same sex marriage. So far it's been mostly non-hostile. Not so long ago, certain heterosexual activities were illegal and immoral. No one really bats an eye at that now. Marriage of two different races was illegal. Even after it was legalized it was still frowned on. Not much before I was born my mom's husband helped build the local moose lodge (or elks or something like that). After it was built all the guys on the construction crew joined it... but he was not allowed to be a member because he was married to a 'Nip' and had half-breed kids. Yep... it's a slippery slope. Let them mixed marriages happen and pretty soon everyone wants to get married. Pretty soon it will be *****s and then dogs and cats... (rolls eyes)
I described in a previous post that it's only religious if you want it to be. I was married in a civil ceremony and later in a relgious one. The civil ceremony is the legal one since it occurred first. In our country clergy can perform marriages. That's not true everywhere. You have to be married in a civil ceremony in Italy and in Japan, you merely register at the municipal office. People confuse the issue when they bring religion into it. Marriage has always been between boys and girls. It should stay that way. We need to start respecting the traditions on which our society was built. There are reasons for marriage. You need to start thinking about and respecting those reasons.
Let the weirdos do whatever they want "legally". As long as they don't get with in eyesight with me I dont' care.,..... gives me the heebie geebies (sp?) witnessing it. I've always wondered how they introduce themselves to people as husband and wife though. Or is it wife and husband? Or like... who is who? Who decides such a thing and is there actual thought process and dialouge involved?
I'm still waiting for someone to list out all of the financial benefits of marriage that is going to cause all of these straight people and roomates to start getting married. I got married, added my wife to my insurance, and it cost me money. Where's the savings?!?!
Only gay guys get the insurance benefits. And surely you were kidding, a combined policy should be much cheaper than two individual polices.
The state where my husband grew up, Missouri, once banned marriages between whites and Orientals. My husband would not have been able to marry me. Some people in this country seem to base those bans on their interpreation of the Bible. In other counbtries it may be social class. Muslims here have been known to murder a daughter who dates a guy who isn't Muslim. People have always been tacky about marrying outside of your social group. Check out Romeo & Juliet.
2 consenting adults is cool right? How bout 3? How bout 4? Brother & sister? Hey they're consenting? Who cares what other people do right? << devils advocate
Hey, I tried starting a mindless thread about a mindless movie the other day, and only got two responses:p Here you go, everyone. Entertainment everyone can enjoy regardless of ethnicity, religion, or sex.
And one of like 30 that have added constitutional amendments to ban same sex marriage. I guess it will take the Supreme Courts to get involved to change things as the voters have weighed in.
I land in the Jefferson camp and believe in the States Right to govern themselves . So I support the referendum even if I don't agree with the outcome of the vote. The results are nothing new or ground breaking considering several other states (33 I think rings a bell) had similar referendums and results. I think we convolute the argument in way too many ways. For example the use of marriage in our tax code...we are passing laws to use our social behaviors to correct flaws in our tax laws rather then just changing a flawed tax code.....So until we take all the tangents out of the argument we wil never get to the true nature of the question. What is marriage and who gets to govern it?
They have that in Utah already. The real question is what are so many afraid of gay people marring? Because this assault on gay marriage is nothing to do about tradition and everything to do about fear.
