Tell me what I need to know. How big do I need? What brands are good? Which ones are junk? What features or designs are good to watch for? Sent from my SCH-I500 using Tapatalk
The super splitter is awesome it can do a cord of wood in an hour. Look it up on you tube but it is really dangerous and fast. I pinched the top of my finger in between the wood and the push arm. So if you want to be safer u can get a regular hydrallic on which is much slower but safer....
I should probably add that I want a good value. Dont need the absolute fastest or best. I want something that works for a decent price. Sent from my SCH-I500 using Tapatalk
I hate to put it this way but as little as possible while still getting a quality machine. What do I need to spend? Can u tell this is my first splitter? Sent from my SCH-I500 using Tapatalk
Brad, I did a bunch of research and bought a log splitter last year. We bought the SpeeCo 25 ton from Farm & Fleet. There are a couple of them rated at 25 ton, but the one you want has the 16 gpm pump. This means a 12 second cycle time vs 17 seconds. It don't sound like much but it makes a difference. It came with a 304 cc Brigs engine which my GF can start. This will split everything you throw at it. We split 3 full cords with it last year. Also, get a good chainsaw or 2. Almost forgot......... get the optional side table ($30) for it. It really helps. http://www.speeco.com/products.php?id=95&prod=353
Don't laugh but this Is what I use. I know, It sucks!! Been using this method for 12 years. Yes It's a ton more work but most of the wood splitters I've seen out there don't suit my needs. The rams aren't long enough. Most are 2 feet long which Is too short for my wood stove. If I ever get a wood splitter It will be custom made by someone. Most of the commercial made splitters I've seen are chincy and not very durable and I've seen allot of them. For the record I'm sure I burn and split more wood then most people do. I go through between 150 to 250 tree's a year depending on how long/cold the winter Is. I heat a 3 story house along with a garage and a big shed using wood heat from a wood boiler. When do you plan on doing most of your splitting? If It's In the summer, spring, fall months you will need a splitter. If It's In the winter when It's cold you'll be surprised how easy stuff splits with just a splitting mall and wedge. Another thing you will have to take Into account Is how big of pieces do you plan on splitting? Do you want to lift them or not? I'm looking VERY forward to the responses to this thread as I too am In the market for something that suits my needs for a splitter.
Wood splitters and fingers are not a good match. LOL.. be careful, I'm missing the last 1/4 of my left pointer finger, pinched it off on a wood splitter. Lucky it wasn't more.
Wow Rob, that's no good!! Glad that's all that happened. Back In the day when I was a youngster my dad had a woodsplitter (home made one). This thing was awesome and powerful. He too damn near took his hand off. These things can be dangerous that's for sure. Some SOB stole this wood splitter about 25 years ago while It was In my grandpa's pole shed. I'm still pissed off about this, I could use this thing. :D
Thanks Greg. I see those all the time when I walk into Fleet farm. Never knew if they were any good or not. About how much did you pay for yours if you don't mind me asking. I already have the good chainsaw that I have had for years being a Stihl. Guess I don't know for sure yet. But we will be running wood heat mostly in our new cabin we are building next year on our land. But since it won't be our primary place to live we won't have as much wood to split as someone that lives there year round. The splitting will be occurring out of hunting season of course. So mainly, spring, summer and early fall.
This one has a 13 second cycle time @ 25 tons for $1189. Thoughts? http://www.fleetfarm.com/catalog/pr...itters/speeco-splitmaster-22-ton-log-splitter
Out door wood boiler...1/3 the cuts to length and no splitting. Actually only used home made splitters but the best by far were the verticals - roll and stand up the wood(no lifting), and the three pt attach for tractors...no comparison to what you can get from fleet farm.
I need to get you guys pics of my uncles home brew. My dad uses it some and this thing is a beast. Sheared 16 5/8" grade 8 hitting a not. He upgraded the bolt sizes now so it doesn't break bolts. Anyways. It uses a HP engine and a backhoe hydraulic pump with a backhoe cylinder on it. Its a verticle one. It is one nasty machine to say the least.
We have a Huskee and it's either a 32 or 35 ton splitter. We've had it for 2 or 3 years so far and it's done a really good job for us. I have no idea what my dad spent on it because he got it used but it was in like-new condition. It's really kinda overkill for what most people need, but my dad usually goes overkill with things like that to ensure that it's plenty for what we need and a good quality product.
