For those of you that had hunting land, and then had it logged (both select and clear cut) how much did it help your hunting? Did you try and make new funnels or travel corridors with the logger? Did you seem to get more deer and/or more bucks using your property on a regular basis? How long did it take for the effects to be seen?

I have a select cut that will happen in 2016 and am pumped about hopefully significantly improving the deer habitat and the amount of bucks I see outside of the rut. Right now it seems the only time bucks use my property is when they are trying to find the does that are around a lot.

I had a select cut done on my timber in 2011. Problem was, he did it in August. That season sucked, as he was in my woods off an on until mid September. 2012- new growth and started seeing deer. Saw a few nice bucks. Last year-EHD hit us hard. The new growth of saplings and briars are very thick now, so I'm hoping for a better 2014.

No funnels made , but he did open up some logging roads that see some deer travel. So far, I'm optomistic, but haven't seen much in the lines of improvement in hunting.

Third year you will see a difference....

Do yourself a favor and use the brush from any tops that you cut for firewood that is left over and make piles to funnel deer....

Yup, like BHH said third year is the year you really see it...now if done in the spring/winter I would say second year you will see it too! The problem with selective cutting is it doesn't take long for mature trees left to bush out and choke out the sun yet again like old...all depends just how 'selective' they are.

Anything to thicken up the understory will ALWAYS help the woods hold more deer :)

if they cut all the oaks off lookout the deer and turkeys will have to go else where when your crops have been taken out.the tops of the trees do make great bedding. i have a pc of ground that is wiped out because a logging company was let loose to bring maximum dollars for a guy, they even took all the sycamore trees which i thought would be worthless. left a pure mess in the farm fields with the ruts they left.

What trees do you guys look for when doing hinge cutting? Where would someone start as a beginner to tree management?
