Went back up to the property and over-seeded the plots that I blew off. I will go back up in 2-3 weeks to work on the moss and sedge. Things around here are just barely starting to get going and I don’t want to do it to soon.
Rain last two days herem warm ,rained all night wet and foggy . Opening day of youth turkey. Alfalfa is looking great in the farmers field. Unfortunately I've seen just one lone hen. My end of garden clover looks great but need to weed and grass kill.
Here's an update on the 11 chicks that hatched . I have 14 more in the incubator that should hatch in 2wks. They are mostly feathered out. Ill get them out side just before the others hatch.
The garden is still not touched. I have plants , just peppers and tomatoes. It's a awlful mess with weeds and of course a zillion dandelions. I did get a first asparagus pick in though. Oh found out the kids are getting me heritage turkey chicks for mothers day
Honest to Pete, weather changed again. No more nice days, another 3 days of rain! Well, I warned about it, it's also colder agsin as well. At least the wind calmed downa bit.
I put some moss killer on this small area today. We will see how good it works…. Next step is to get back up there and spray the sedge and grasses. Also the clover I over seeded is coming in well too
My grain seeds were so so, some sprouted. The crows ,squirrel and sparrows got alot. That said the rape seed is doing very, very well.
My second hatch of 14, I got 10 chicks. Not sure if others will hatch today. This was an experiment, set and left alone. No candling, other than a couple on lock down day. no opening incubatoruntil lock down and left all chicks in incubator to help others hatch. I did end up with 3 that needed help out. They are doing fine, I'm transitioning the totally dry ones out to brooder today
Cold, cold, cold and rain. No sure when I'll get the garden in. I do have a dozen potato plants growing from tiny spuds buried during last years harvest, asparagus and new aspargus bed coming up. Then there is the tomato seed sprouts starting, all this in the raised beds I've put in the last few years. They were all filled with chicken litter. I do a deep bedding in winter to keep chickens warm. On low snow times I clean out the coop. Usually 2-3x's a winter. 5-7 heaping wheel barrels full each cleaning. I also fill with corn stalks and plant debris.
Under a frost warning then remaining cold with 4 straight days of rain. The property is inching toward a foot high. I had a year where on June 6th after planting the entire garden we got an actual freeze and it killed everything. This could end up being that type of year.
I need to do a bunch of spraying, last week it was in the high 80’s low 90’s and windy. This week in the 40’s and 50’s, rain on the way and windy… can’t seem to catch a break either.
Finally got some time to go spray the plots for grasses. I need to do some spot spraying for the bigger sedges since this won’t kill them. I was going to spray for broadleafs but there was a bunch of leftover brassicas coming up from last year’s planting. Not sure why they are coming now but I thought I might as well just leave them for now. I’m undecided what I want to do with a couple of the plots so I didn’t do anything with them, might just kill them and plant something else this fall. The moss killer is working but really slowly.
If that brassica is rape, probably are if in a mix, if they go to seed they are diffficult to get rid of. Good incertain areas , new deep woods plots for one.
They probably are, if the deer/bear don’t eat it before then I would be very surprised. If not I will spray again soon
I also went back up there on Friday to check my cameras and spot spray for sedge. That was a no go before I even started, back pack sprayer was leaking so I had to order a new one. In the meantime I ordered some sedge specific killer and will just spray the whole thing when it gets here.
Been putting in some work the last few weeks. Drilled in 3 large dove/pheasant turkey/deer plots with a mix of sorghum, millet, sunflower, and chuffa. Then drilled in a 1/4 acre of just sunflowers. Re drilled my large clover plot also. Hammered rain right after. Cut some trees, and tilled up and sprayed everything before either planted, getting the two main kill plots ready to seed in a month or two. Seeded in my in temp grass screens, and planted another bag of myscanthus rhizomes to fill in the holes in my access screen. Got camera batteries replaces, cut down some trees. Also planted a bunch of sweet corn for us, but I'm sure the critters will get their share. Next up is to hang another stand, cut some more trees. I need to replace the lick ropes in front of my stands also. Been fun getting stuff done! Sent from my SM-S918U using Tapatalk
Decided to put up a box blind in the backyard since the hunting has been good here at home. The base is done
They cut the alfalfa fields today...I fear a fawn was lost 100 yrds up from the kitchen window. Less than a 1/2 hr. after they stopped, 6 huge buzzards were on what they hit. I have to assume a fawn.
Today they win rowed(?) The alfala and several big dump trucks came in and got it. Man with all this rain he got alot in this cutting. Deer turkey crows, rabbits were very active last night and this morning. I got the last of the upper plots mowed, finally dried off good enough to run on. Two nights ago I had to winch hubby out near the fence line he mowed a tad too close. I also finally got all of lower plots done. So many downed trees I need to remove I also lost a bunch of young fruit trees to mice. I have a few mulberry seedlings popping, I'm just going to plant those in the spots they produce crazy amounts plus all summer/fall. Everything loves them. It also may move the raccoon down there and not so much up here where my flocks are.
I went up today and sprayed the clover with the sedge killer, hopefully it works. There’s a lot of it mixed in there, some areas worse than others. The clover looks really good
