Well since the last one went up in flames, let's try it again. Try to stay on topic guys... 1. A tagging system. That way if I were to say, "Hey did you guys see the monster that Vito shot?", I could tag Vito in it, it would send him a notification telling him he was mentioned in a thread, and then he could click it to go to that thread and choose to respond. Or perhaps I have a tuning question posted in technical and I was wanting to hear from guys like Bruce, I could tag them so they'd see the thread and not overlook it. No one uses the tech forum, but this way he'd be sure to see it. I think we could get more use out of all the sub-forums this way too, because you could post in the correct forum, then tag each other in the post to ensure those posts aren't overlooked or not seen in a hidden sub forum like "technical". I don't want it to be more like Facebook with statuses and crap, I just think the tagging would be a good way to become more interactive and the entire forum more well used versus posting everything in bowhunting and water cooler. Suggestions???
I think the forum has too many sub forums. I think if combine some of them, you will get more activity in all threads.
I'm still all for someone getting a chance to have a hunt video tapped by a pro staffer and put on one of the bow hunt or die episodes Sent from my LG-E739 using Tapatalk 2
If the Pro-Staff did this as a full time job, then I could see it. But, we're just like you and our limited time in the woods is just as important as yours.
I respectfully disagree there are too many subforums, but there may be room to consolidate. I can't tell (this time) if Vito is serious or just poking. If its the former, is the concern really a screen real-estate, spatial utilization or formatting issue? I don't have a problem with opposing views (political or otherwise), but think a politics subforum might have merit--keep those debates quarantined to that box. A home- FAQ, hall of fame, "best of" or other definitive location (more stickies) for some frequently recurring topics. Prior to making changes, maybe use the survey tool (as appropriate) to validate the change is desire/not. My 2 pesos.
You guys were doing great with the suggestions at the beginning of the other thread. So much so that we started a list of those suggestions and have discussed some of them. So, this isn't falling on deaf ears. With that said, I really don't have any suggestions beyond what you guys have had.
That was actually a serious suggestion. Look at forums like Tech Talk, Turkey Hunting, and Big Game Hunting (just a few examples). Why couldn't shot just be in the Bowhunting Talk? I'm sure some good questions or good threads get missed. The best forums I've been a part of have few sub forums. This causes more threads to be seen, and more conversation. Segregation is never the answer! FTR, I was half kidding with that last statement.
Thanks for clarifying. I've had the reverse experience when I'm trying to find specific information. I think there are different (sorry for reverting to my inner IT geek) use cases or purposes for consolidation and segregation. Fostering the conv, I think your right, less is more. For finding specific content, or watching certain categories of info, the search, new posts may be too broad--my opinion. Reverting back to the credibility ratings concept mentioned earlier might help in search result weighting or indexing key topics. Cross benefit is isolating to the elves behind the scenes may be data for analysis/fodder for articles or topics for deep dives external to the forum. Ok, there is at least 4pesos of contribution.
Yeah there is credibility to that. For forums like BHC, though, conversation is usually what drives them. Less conversation usually means less visits. If you post a topic in the Bowhunting Talk section about tuning, you will get many more views and replies than if you posted it in Tech Talk. To me, that is beneficial to both the members and BHC. Perhaps a way to remedy both concerns, would be to require a thread starter to pick a topic from a drop down menu. This topic may or may not need to be shown with the thread, but could be used for search and research purposes.
I believe a unbiased gear guide would be of great value. Seems like there are hundreds of redundant posts in regards, to what binos, harness, broadheads, trail cams, arrows, treestand, ranger finder, and etc.... to buy. Each piece of gear should have multiple recommendations. E.G. Best of the best, BH.com users pick, staff pick, best value.... or something of that nature....
I would've suggested that to be outside the forum , site content as it could also be linked to the bh.com stop store. I agree there is a need for the unbiased comparison in the marketplace. On a parallel tangent (math geeks will try to rationalize that), I've always felt there is a need for a whole 'unbiased' show (a la the DIY show cool tools) for all the new equipment that comes out. There are too many disparate outlets (and a now another Archerywire.com) that (can) only focus on a few items each week/month. Sell that to Outdoor Channel and I'd like my cut of the royalties bh.com shop credit.
Ouch. In all seriousness, while this is going to seem contradictory since in one breath a little while ago I was advocating a Political forum, and now, well, I do believe Vito's idea of certain forum consolodation would be best. There's certain sub forums that do get plenty of activity, while others almost none. I'm guilty of using the Bowhunting main forum for all tech, gear, whitetail mapping/scouting, and general questions simply because I know more people visit the main section. Look at AT. They have a sub-forum for pretty much every topic in the universe. They even have subforums within subforums. Not only is this a navigational nightmare for the average user, it just splits the content up too much. I'm a fan of centralized material.
I vote for less sub-forums .... The Water Cooler is fine ... people just need to keep their noses out of threads they ***** that are in there ...
I like it the way it is currently. Post a thread, get responses. Simple, effective, and actually a normal way for people to communicate without all the "facebook" type crud.
Eesh! Let me try again ... instead of complaining about the threads that exist in the WC, stay out of them and shut up :D
