Here in Mn you can't use shed traps for deer, so I'm thinking of ways to "influence" where sheds fall off by legal means. Any ideas? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Ha true, but imagine the excitement of walking up on 7 sheds at once Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I agree find the winter food sources/bedding. But to answer your question a few ideas I have heard of people trying are put corn or whatever "feed" your deer come to and put it down by a large log or logs and they could bump an antler off trying to get the feed. You can also put it around a bale of hay and its the same concept.
I understand the idea of this, but if you are trying to influence where the deer sheds their crowns, doesn't that defeat the purpose of finding the sheds abs getting an idea of their "home" turf (at least during the child weather months)?
Yes it would, but I just want to get my feet wet in shed hunting anyway I can and I really want a large set to rattle with. And to see what bucks survived since we hunt in a high density area.
You could hinge a small group of saplings together and put corn or any attractant under them. If you cut around 2' feet and make it so the "bait" is out of reach they will have to work for it and get under those trees.
Just put some miles on it makes the finds that much more rewarding and you learn a bunch on info on the deer herds.
I would dump a pile of corn in a really thick bush. If they want it enough they will force their way in.
I doubt that would pass as legal in Mn, sounds like any kind of device man made is illegal Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
As I'm just getting back into deer hunting, when would be a good time to get out and do some shed hunting? I took a walk in the woods as it was a nice enough day today (in central Minnesota). I saw a ton of tracks, meandered through some semi thick cover following some of the larger tracks and came up empty. Is it to early at this point or should they be in the early stages of shedding their crowns?
I have already found one nice side in Central MN. I know of 6 from central MN so far. Where in Central MN are you from?
Here is my shed trap. We been walking the woods for the last couple of weeks all she found was last years sheds. Today we walked about 2 hours and she found a set of an 8 pointer. Most bucks still has their antlers this was the first fresh ones we found.
after researching more about the Shedding process, I have deemed shed traps almost not very effective. Having good food sources and bedding areas will prove same results. I was under the impression that antlers would gradually become less attached and a shed trap would help knock them off but the process is actually very rapid and can only take a couple of hours sometimes so shed traps just wont work until that magic moment and if they arent at your trap when the antlers come off it wont help anyway. Im just goona use a big corn foodplot and a dog
