I've never watched their shows and I don't follow them at all... Can anyone tell me how they can afford 6,000 acres in Iowa?

I haven't watched the Outdoor Channel in years and I know who these people are, so that should tell you how popular they are, which means lots of $$$ in advertisement and sponsorship deals. Not to mention I'm assuming they have a few TV shows and DVD sales.

The land they "own" (bank owned?) wasn't bought as prime hunting land. They bought it and transformed it. They are also in Salem, Iowa (southern Iowa) So they probably did pay in the 1200-$2000/acre price. However with what they have done to it it's probably worth $3000-5000/acre now.

Straight farmland? Surveys show that farmland averages $4400 in wi and $8500 in Iowa per acre.

What percentage of the land that they own is tillable? Are they farming it or renting it out? Maybe I'm mistaken, but I thought they were buying some of this land with other investors.

Straight farmland in the fond du lac area. All tillable. Very little for swamps, wooded or low land in this area.

Right, it's inflated because of location. Just like some tillable land in Iowa sold for $21,500 an acre at auction, because of manure disposal.

I have to believe that they are getting a pretty penny from realtree, UA, and wildgame to rep their products. Hunting is big business.

Met them here in NC at the Dixie Deer Classic a few years back. They are really nice people.

I have sat through their seminars before but did not this show. My son did and talked about what they said for quite a while. They are both great to talk to and very knowledgeable. Dan they farm it themselves, the amount of ground they plant for deer is unbelievable. When I got invited down and shown around the properties I could not believe it when Lee said they only hunt the field edges and NEVER go into the woods except to recover deer and shed hunt.

Wow I wish banks around here were generous enough to let me hunt their land :)

Unless there was a foreclosure...the land is not "bank owned"

Gotta believe that most if not all their cameras were free from sponsors, not to mention food plot seed, feeder feed, most if not all hunting clothes, bows, arrows, and everything that you could ever want to put on your bow. But to drop 8-10 mil on land...geez. I wonder if what they did in there previous jobs or if they knew someone in the industry that helped them get started.

Is that because they own only a very small amount of woods so they keep it as their sanctuary?

    Not sure if serious...

They own 6,000 acres - Surely they have large chunks of prime timber.

Edit: I've read numerous things stating that they do not actually own 6,000 acres - They have arrangements with friends, etc that give them access to that much land. Not sure if true, but I've read it in a few places after a quick search on them.

It actually wouldn't be out of the ordinary to not have much timber if primary purpose of land is to farm. Buddy I went to school with and his dad farm 3500 acres with probably 3300 of it being tillable, not really any big blocks of timber. When you make money off the land farming timber doesn't pay the bills.

No, they have plenty of timber. I think this tactic is becoming more and more common with folks who have a lot of heavily managed lands. I know the Drurys and Jim Thome, among others, do the same thing.

They do this to avoid putting pressure on the deer where they live (cover). This allows the deer to have a sanctuary where they aren't disturbed and aren't being pushed to the neighbors. When you're in the business of growing big deer the worst thing that can happen is for a neighbor to kill them. Staying out of the woods and planting a ton of food means those deer never have to leave your property. The less pressured they are the more secure they feel coming out into the fields during daylight so it's a win-win for them.

Lee and tiff have posted on archery talk before but left because of jealous haters bashing them like crazy. wish we could get them on this forum, we could all learn alot from them, and the bh.com participants are mature enough to NOT bash them. but they have a show...bh.com has a show...ehh maybe/maybe not.
