Whats the obsession? I have neighbors that mow their lawns 2 and sometimes 3 times a week. They spend (waste) countless hours each week making sure their lawn looks perfect. Whats the point? If I didn't live in a subdivision I would till up my entire lawn and make it a garden.

I'm making a call tomorrow on a place that may be for sale with a good chunk of land. Its a major downgrade in house, but would be a huge upgrade in land. Much smaller house on 41 acres, 32 of which I would vegetable farm. I need to get out of here. :D

Anyone here anal and waste piles of time trying to win a blue ribbon for best looking lawn on the block?

Heck no. My 14 year old mows it twice a week though. Now if I could just get him to edge a little better.....

Veggie farm? Heck no man. Maples and pines. Maybe a couple oaks here and ther with a couple acre pond.

    Stocked of course....

I use to when I live in Florida..

I spent the hottest time of the year of a new house I had moved in and ripped out the Byhalia Grass and replaced it with Bermuda 419 grass the same grass they use on golf courses. It cost $250 a pallet it took 3 pallets.

This grass can't be cut with a power mower. Oh no!! You had to use a rotary bladed mower and the blades had to be sharpened once every 2 weeks. And you can't cut the grass in the same direction. You have to rotate directions.

The fertilizer was a three part mix that had to be put out 3 times a week with some Ironite to help maintain a strong green healthy look. Now the weed killer was a 24/6 which controlled Byhalia Grass regrowth....

This weed killer cost $90.00 an ounce. You can't buy it at any lawn and service store you had to get it from an industrial lawn service company that supplied golf courses. You can get this same treatment from Trugreen, but it's not the same when you as the homeowner control your lawn.

Now once a week you have to get on your hands and knees and pull the roots of St Augustine grass from your lawn wearing golf shoes. the reason for the golf shoes to let those little spikes perforate the lawn so the grass can breath.

Now here is one of the biggest pluses for having a lawn that looked like a golf course..The class of your neighbors. All of my neighbors in that new subdivision, was 2 NFL Players, an FBI Agent, retired military, police officers, lawyers, and doctors.

    No RIF-RAFF!!

The negatives were dogs love to take a crap on soft grass damn! and from time to time a neighbor would be on the side of my lawn hitting golf balls into undeveloped wooded lot behind the homes.

After selling the house and moving to Virginia, I went back to Florida to see that house and the new owners tilled up the grass and left as such. The neighbors moved out.

The class of people are just plan seedy, One of my good friends that lived near me moved out last year after the second carjacking and home invasion robbery in the area.

I don't mind saying that I was anal over my lawn because it was pride and joy it was a lawn I always dreamed of having. Seeing a lawn like that exudes pride.

I did it for a couple of years. But it was a little city lot and took no time at all. Did it out of boredom but mostly to show my retired, snoopy neighbors my lawn looked better than theirs with less effort.

Now I spend almost all of my time and effort at my place up north making trails and food plots in the woods where almost no one will ever see.

I don't mow mine at all, the lawn guy comes as needed and keeps it looking good....sometimes it's weekly and sometimes it's biweekly....he doesn't cut it if isnt needed. It takes me close to an hour and a half to cut and edge my place when I did it. The lawn guy sends three guys and they do it in 25 minutes. When I figure in my time it's cheaper to watch him do it while I am looking out my home office window.

I mow my yard only when I can't see my dog anymore.

    Lol!

Dan, I hear ya! I live in a neighborhood that is the same way. One neighbor literally mows when the grass has yet grown from the previous day or two of mowing. I mow once a week, I hate it, and I have 2+acres of it. So I bought a ZTR. I do like the look of my property when it's maintained, but I feel if I get behind on it (as I did this week), I'm being a sloppy neighbor. Problem is, I CANNOT find any land around here to move. I'm not cut out to be a residential person.

I have not cut my grass since late May. My lawn is brown and crunchy due to the drought. I dont care for cutting grass and find it a necessarry evil.

This ^. The one good thing about this drought is I haven't had to cut my grass in a couple weeks.

I've considered lawn turf, but that stuff is pricey.

I hate mowing my lawn. I have a fairly small yard, but it still seems to take me
at least an hour. It's always an hour that I would rather spend doing something else. I typically wait until the grass has gone to seed or my wife mentions that it needs cut.

I can work on a food plot for multiple hours and love every minute of it. I don't mind mowing because I mow with my tractor. Now trimming and landscaping I hate !!!!!!!!!!

I like to keep my lawn looking decent, but I by no means obsess about it.

Think about it though - when you get older, get married, have kids, and you don't hunt or fish, what else is there in life? Maybe you golf. Maybe you play video games. Heck, maybe you even do woodworking. But it seems like most suburbanites worry about their lawns, decks, pools and grills. It's their "thing". The way I obsess about using scent-free soap for a month before hunting season starts, other people worry about aerating their lawn and what type of seed will grow best for their lighting conditions. To each their own. In the end, we're both equally as screwed up in the head. :tu:

I'm not anal about it, but it's nice to keep the place looking halfway decent....of course with no rain now, I haven't really cut the lawn in about 3 weeks, maybe more. I do have 2 spots where I put in new seed earlier this year that I have been spot watering to keep the seed going , but thats about it. I have about a 1/4 acre, typical subdivision lot, takes me maybe and hour including the edging to make it look nice, no big deal.

We till up more and more of the "lawn" each year for gardens and have plans to convert what we don't till into fruit bush sections or "road" to get to the rest. We would like to grow and/or kill everything we eat. We only cut the grass to get material for the mulch piles.

    That goes for me too

I have a neighbor that that is obsessed with keeping their yard perfect year round. She runs sprinklers every day rain or shine, cuts grass every 2-3 days, is always doing something in their yard. That have 2 step children that I have seen outside maybe 3-4 times in 6 years!! The husband is grumpy and doesn't talk and the woman is pure evil!!! She is a A+ you know what.... She is a freak when it comes to her yard though. A few months after we moved there I was at my inlaws place which adjoins here and I was shooting at rabbits with my .17. Well as I am walking back home she has the nerve to tell me there is to be no shooting in this neighborhood. Keep in my that we stay out in the country and I was on my inlaws piece of property that is about 14 acres of fields, woods, and swamp. We are also surrounded by 90% of my wife family and their property except for these people. So being I am nice and like to show respect to my elders I shook my head and said ok....Once I got home though I proceeded to pull out my TC Encore 300 win mag and do a little practicing in my back yard which adjoins her property. Needless to say after that she has yet to say anything else to me about shooting in the neighborhood lol....

Get rid of the dogs and buy yourself some goats. When they start getting old... kapowww! Then have a few friends over for dinner. Everyone's happy, except maybe the neighbors. On second thought, maybe moving would be best after all.

I mow w. my tractor and a 6' finish mower, and I trim and edge w. Roundup. Takes me just about an hour and 15 minutes to mow my 2 acres. I usually have to mow about once a week, but this year it's been more like every other week or even every third week and I don't miss it.

Definantly not obsessed with mine. Mine serves as a quad track any way (kids) My labs wreck it, dig holes and such. now my question is Dan'o what the heck are you going to do with 32 acres of vegies or are you refering to food plot?? :D
