made this at my wife's request for my brother in law. i hate making things for "free" but this is something i felt was paid for in other ways, like him defending my freedom to make this . i made it on some poplar, not sure exact species. it's 11X12 ish . i didn't want to just copy the eagle and globe pic so i changed it some, mostly the eagle. hope you all like it. giving it to him friday, but i doubt he'll see it here.... i wouldn't be able to sell something like this one. i would have to buy a license to use the logo from the USMC/ government. if i did an original art work or a pic that i have permission to use the i could sell it. i have not figured out how much to charge yet. original work, that being from my idea or something that isn't a copy would not be cheap. as far as doing a commissioned work i would charge for the materials (wood, electricity, finishing costs, mounting materials, and shipping) and my time by the hour. this is the part i haven't decided on yet, i can say for sure that it will be at least 15.00 an hour but i'm leaning twards more. however this hasn't been decided yet. thanks for your interest.... Jay thanks for everyone's positive feedback
dunno...never paid a license fee for my tattoo... I have been a Marine for just over 20 years (just pinned on LtCol in the first) and have NEVER heard about us going after anyone, not even sure that the EGA is copy righted (but don't write a check against that I was wrong once before). That is cool, great work! Sean
florida marine.... well i'm not positive either, but the copyright laws are a concern , or should be, for any artist. last thing you want to do is spend your time making something, getting a couple hundred bucks and then get sued for ALOT of money. scottmack... i totally agree with you on that, but unfortunately artwork is a strange thing. i find that (not trying to sound cocky) just about everyone or most people really like my stuff, depending on subject matter(if it's an evil looking pic, or an action pic of a deer being killed some are offended or don't like it).... i also find that almost as many would like to own or have my stuff... and lastly that hardly anyone wants to pay for my stuff. that's just the reality of art, and until i become more know and branch out more i believe that's how it is. like i said though nothing has been decided and until i set a price it's still up in the air. thanks again for all your guys and gals nice comments....Jay
Well, on the copyright topic, I did find this page... IDK if it helps any, but. http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:US-MarineCorps-Emblem.svg As far as the work you did above... I think you should be fine. I think you varied it enough. I still can't get over how detailed it is... That's just friggin' awesome.
thanks all, i did some reading on the copy right issue and for every one i find that says it's ok i can find one that's not ok. anyhow thanks again for all the nice compliments
