Hey folks, what is the latestt you've ever heard of a fawn being born? I went with my brother to show him where to hang a stand and we found the remains of a fawn. The front legs were about 16-18 inches long and the rib cage was about the size of a grapefruit and there were spots on the hide. There was also still red meat on the rib cage. I'm no expert by any means, but how could a fawn be born this late?
September is the latest that I've seen a small spotted fawn that looked newborn. Don't you guys have like way way too many does in TN? Maybe it's just taking the bucks till April to breed the last ones.
The gestation period for the whitetail is a little over 7 months...roughly 200 day's give or take week. With that said, mid-late August is the latest I've seen a newborn fawn....which means she was either breed in her third cycle mid-late January... Or, she's was a fawn her self that cycled in for her first time mid-late January, which is rare but dose happen.
This year we saw several fawns in September that still had spots. We have a very high doe to buck ratio and we actually witnessed 2 mature bucks fighting to kill one another in mid January so our belief is that with all the does some are coming into heat in January and are getting bred which is why we have seen the younger fawns later. That's just my take, some biologist somewhere may have a more scientific explanation.
I just seen one hit on the side of the road a couple of days ago that looked like it just lost it's spots. weirdest one I seen was about 15 yrs ago. I seen a spike buck fawn with spots. the spikes were at least 5 inches long. I have a pic somewhere, if I find it i'll post it.
2 winters ago we had a fawn with spots in February. Never saw it again after mid feb so we're guessing it didnt make it.
In Kentucky latest I've seen a very small fawn was in September. Likely born sometime in August. Bucks are always willing its just a matter of one finding a late doe.
