I know the late season can be challenging especially when rain is a factor. Does anyone have a proven way to increase your chances when down to the last hours of turkey season? I'm mainly hunting huge wooded ridges with one small field with a small pond in the middle. This has repeatedly proven to not be a great turkey hunting spot, but Ive heard people say they go to fields in a thunderstorm. My point is I have only 1 day left to get the job done here in Illinois so I need some Ideas. Any piece of last minute desperation late season advice you may have, SHARE IT!
I wish I had a dollar for every time I saw flocks of turkeys standing in an open field while it was raining. Also, the birds will see your decoys much easier in the open.
Late season? Our season doesn't even open until this Saturday LOL. I have never hunted them early, so I have no idea how they act. So I have hunted them in the rain, they don't seem to act much differently around here until it is a total down pour. Then I am not even interested in hunting anyway.
Yep, out season opens during the "middle" of the breading I believe. I really wish PA would get out of their old ways and open two weeks early and close two weeks earlier. Many seasons, by late May, you're hunting summer birds and its not uncommon to see poults running around.
We are mid season here in KY and I don't see much of a difference in activity during the rain vs nice sunny day. With that being said I always hunt in an open field on woodline.
In the rain turkey will be on the roost longer before they come down, but the rain will not bother them. They still have to do there thing. I love it when it is raining because I often have to get my child on the school bus and I know that I can get in the woods late and still have a good day. But If it is cold they do seem to a lot less vocal, Our turkey season started this week and the temps were in the 30's the only 2 days I could hunt and the birds were quiet, hoping next week will be better (temps will be in the 70's) for me since I have to work all weekend.
I'm not much of an accomplished turkey hunter but I've seen them in the field during, and just after, the rain. I heard somewhere that they go to the fields after the rain so they don't get dripped on by the canopy overhead...I don't know how true that is, however.
