As I exit the woods this AM, I get almost to my truck and see the farmer who leases the farming rights with a flatbed, his pickup and a HUGE drilling machine. He went up the road on the tractor (to more land he has leased). I stopped in the road and threw my binos up........winter wheat.

I'm getting ready to have 30acres of late season food plots....I hope.

How long 'til this stuff comes up high enough to draw them in?

Around here, the deer usually hit it as soon as it pops up until spring. The lack of rain has really put a damper on the WW crop locally. My moms farm has 30+ acres that was planted a couple of weeks ago and its barely popping through the soil. If you have the moisture, you should have a good late season spot on your hands.

Well, I thought I was golden when they planted winter wheat/ Rye, I really don't know the difference, but I've hunted it 4-5 times now with out a single sighting... lol. But I don't think you'll have that problem Jeff.... ;)

Up here... Winter wheat usually gets planted late October. If we do not have snow cover after it is planted about 2.5 weeks later it is all coming up, a month later it will be 2-3 inches tall.

Our winter wheat up here is looking better than I have ever saw it this year. Our beans were harvested early this year so the wheat got in early and it looks fantastic.

Anyhow, the deer really get into it here in December thru the harvest of it in the late spring.

I bet your wheat grows much faster down south with all the sun and lack of snow.

How fast it comes up will depend on the moisture in your area. If you have adequate rainfall the deer will be eating it in 2-21/2 weeks.

If it has been dry and there is not rain in the forcast, it will take 3-4 weeks.

EDIT: My wheat was planted on October 10th but it has been so dry in my area that the deer have just started hitting it within the last week.
