Where do you guys set up for Late (2-3 hours before dark) turkey hunting? Do you call much? I've killed them in the mornings, called in 2 jakes for Dad Saturday, had a longbeard hang up. I try to catch them going back to the roost, but I've had little to no luck thus far.
Calling in the afternoon can be tough...IMO if you aren't already in line with the path they are taking anyway you will have a tough go at breaking birds to come in. That said, I've probably killed just as many birds in the afternoon returning to roost than I have in the mornings. Know their roost sites (general, like which ridge top or cove of trees) and know which direction they will likely approach from. You can set up as close or as far as you want...I've had birds fly up into the tree I was sitting against literally. No big deal. wait for total darkness and slip out undetected. Noise won't bump them off roost in the dark. Return the next morning knowing exactly where he is.
My experience has been much like Trev's. Positioning makes priority in the PM hunts. Scouting takes priority in the AM hunts. If that makes any sense? Great point about getting out undetected Trevor. Same can be said for getting in, in the mornings, if you get there early enough, (hour or more before light) you can get in CLOSE. As I type this, I know where at least 3 gobblers are roosting (or have roosted) in the last 11 days. Not exactly, but inside 100 yards. In some areas, gobblers can be this patternable in the spring, in other areas, it is anyones guess. Bottom line: Get to where they are going, before they get there - because calling and dekes are even less affective in the PM, IMO. Best of luck!
