Was thinking about buying one of these for work anyway, has anyone used one for hunting? Bosch makes one that. Is acurate to 230 feet (way past my bow range). I dont own a rifle anyway so I dont think I need to much more. Other than the little red laser dot, can anyone tell me any negatives to using one? Thanks.
One down side I see is it doesn't measure in yards so you would need to convert the feet to yards on the fly
Well I have one, they work really well if you can see where you are pointing it at, ie: a big flat wall. But when you start trying to aim it at trees and such without much of a sight I imagine that would start to get complicated. I will take mine outside and mess with it and see what the results are. But I imagine it would almost be easier to pace off some set ranges and mark them rather then try and range something with that on the fly.
For the price you might as well get a range finder lol. Seems like a decent one is a few hundred bucks.
^what he said^ I am very good with numbers, but if a Big Buck came in chasing a doe and stopped at 83 feet, my heartbeat and adrenaline would be so bad that I wouldn't be able to think quick enough, draw, aim and shoot. No need to make the situation any more difficult than it already will be.
Yeah I agree with about everyone else... might just as well buy a range finder.... or you could sight your bow in for feet haha
i just picked up a Simmons range finder 2 days ago with tilt intelligence on sale at walmart for $125.00 and im pretty impressed with it so far for the price point and it runs off a 9V battery.
Honestly the conversion isn't that difficult. 3 feet to a yard right? Just divide your reading by three. 83 feet? Round up to 90. Divide by three = 30 yards so just shoot for slightly under 30 yards. Still easier to just get a rangefinder. Its gonna be tough to point a laser 30 yards and hit what you want without a reticle that a rangefinder provides.
I agree its not that difficult, but when a deer is coming in the only thing I want to be thinking about is the shot. Not conversions. I would just save yourself some time and get a rangefinder.
Why do you need conversions? If your set at 20, 30, 40 yards you just need to train your brain through the summer to think feet instead of yards. 20 yards is 60ft. So instead of having a 20 yard pin you have 60ft pin and so on. I know the general thought when thinking of shooting a bow is in yards but when you break it down its all the same. Just a matter of getting your brain trained to think in feet. The real problem is pointing the laser where you want it. Not having the viewer could be a big issue especially in bright sun. Also, wouldn't a visible laser be considered visible light? Which would be illegal in a lot of places if thats the case.
Thanks for the replies. I'm probably just going to buy a rangefinder. If I do end up buying one of these it will probably stay in my toolbox when I'm in the woods.
