I have never removed stumps. I cut e erything high and if it sprouts produces head high browse. If it doesn't it rots in a few years and I just push it over. In the mean time it doesn't shade the ground but also doesn't visually make the deer think it's a wide open space. Lots of different animals actually use my shoulder high stumps. Squirrels and various birds sit on them. Of course it depends on. What you cut the trees for. We cut a few beech in the front yard that had to get dug out. A decade ago and to this day we are still trying to fill in the craters it made. I don't know why it sinks every single winter but it does. Not a lot but enough to be noticable

Now with 2 rains in after the I initial rains at planting. The trail plots that had the throw and grow with the clovers and rape are growing WAY better than expected. Mind you the dreaded annual rye that was washed into pockets thinning main growing area but a rapid root growth to hold the soils and future water retention for other plants. The rape is growing like mad. Now on my old clover plot behind the garden than had beans in it last year was planted in just rape and clovers. Very poor growth and 1/3 the slope way better soil structure.
No sign-off the rape growing at all way more weed activity starting to pop.
I no Oh no she planted annual rye! Well let me te.l you about annual rye I have planted it in the past in a Succraseed blend for beef cattle a set. Annual rye. It died out within 2 years. Drew in deer and turkey and I shot doe and buck off the area. Unlike the last few years the deer ruti Ely went in to bed cay and night. Routinely wood come in early to feed to the ag feild and come through feeding after leaving the ag field.

I got most of the leaves off the new plot area, going to seed clover tomorrow before the rain comes in a couple of days. I will have to spray this area a couple times this year to keep the weeds a bay. Plantedthe red twig dogwood in several spots around the place. Gully where a couple ofbeech died opening sun to the stream. A long the " pond area , a wet spot not far from that off a plot and a few more along the fence in upper plot that stays pretty wet. Also planted the red current.
Still my other trees have yet to arrive, thank you UPS.
Started cleaning old goat barn and hit the jack pot two 50 # bags of 24-04 fertilizer I bought on sale way before prices went up to 50.00 a bag

So with all the rain and high winds getting the chicken/ green house done is next to impossible. Thus the goat barn cleaning. That has to be tweaked in that some stuff has to stay and quite frankly too heavy for me to move. So a divider is going in and hardware clothe over plexiglass windows. Then cardboard to line inside upper walls to block winds and rodents. The bottom 4' inside is lined in plywood the door is pretty tight but as added precaution will get an edge over lap of hardware clothe screwed on. Needed cleaning and organizing anyways plus I also found moss out and milorganite. It is a temp solution to get first brood of 15 chicks out. The turkey move to their brooder and the baby chicks moved to turkey brooder in a couple of weeks. Turkeys have another 2 weeks before they can be taken out.
The building had turned into a giant " junk drawer" after the goats were killed.

20230429_104123.jpg Spent yesterday and today cutting down 2 26"burroak trees.
#1 reason is I want to enlarge a small foodplot and they throw to much shade.
#2 they severally blocked a lane (viz) I like to watch.
    #3, future firewood.
Got both hunked up but only one brought back to the cabin.
Was too pooped to haul the other. Some of those cobs are over 100#.
    Wet oak is HEAVY!.

Also cut a small area of prickly ash and hauled out the cuttings.. Hands look like hamburger.

I'm a tired fella but this beer (beers) are helping.
Still quite a bit of snow but it's going fast.

Between rains, hail, snow and more rain I managed to fertilize the trail plots. The first ones the brassica I starting to get it's true leaves. Clover is just showing. The last trail plot of just clover and brassica. The clover is showing better and the brassica just starting to pop.
I no sooner finished skies opened again

Also I have been cleaning up the trails from all the downed limbs and branches. Trimming shooting lanes for new tree stands and cleaning up the old stand sites. A few more to go then should be good to go. Will be doing some spraying and fertilizing pretty soon also.

Have wanted to have a stand here for years.
Often a south wind (morning) have kept me from hunting.
Finally said F_It. I'm going in!.
I'm a treestand guy but knew I'd have to build this iffn I wanted to hunt with a south wind.
Got the platform done, structure is built and got the material today to sheath it and get it done.
Gonna spray foam when done to make it as airtight aspossible.

It's only about 60 yards from my cabin but is in a great morning travel corridor.

Will post pics as it progresses.

April 5th Post 39 I planted upper behind the house trail plots. Lots of snow and freezing after. I did a rye grass heavy throw and grow with my forage rape and clovers blend. Fertilized with 24-0-4 during some storms and will again at next ones. Very slow deep woods growth. That said growing and even though much seed washed away into thick green pockets the rest is holding soil and well spaced.
Until yesterday when the farmer spent the entire day spraying tankers of manure over rye then chisel plowing it in, the deer tracks were many and some huge on my trails.
Lol wrong devise pics In a moment.

Hhhmmm, edit won't work. Sorry so many but long winding trails and that's just part of what was planted. This is 200 ft from the corn field . Goes from the corner of field through my woods up to the road . Where across the road is my upper plots . That then links 1300ft of plots and planted trails to the farm fields over there
    .

Well as you may have noticed in all my pics on the site I live on the side of a hill. We get torrential down pour and lots of top soil movement. Not good when your sitting on a rock pile as it were. Rye grass grows in cold fast and has a fibrous root system that hold soil. You also won't find standard commercial throw and grows not loaded with cheap annual rye grasses. It also gives cover for the very slow perennial clovers I added from turkey and crows. All woods up here are loaded with crows. Now I also knew that a lot of seed would wash out on first heavy rain , it did,rye being the lightest of the seeds was the first to wash out. I have some beautiful carpets of green along lower edges of the trails. Thinned perfect for the rape and clovers.
I have planted HSRG in here in the past it dies out in 2 years
