Ok so technically it's not equipment in the original sense, but food can help or hinder your hunting experience. That being said I've been trying to cut some "Baby Fat" the past two weeks. Trying to eat Paleo, basically cutting out all junk. I've stumbled upon these bars. They are Delish, GF, Dairy Free, Soy Free, Vegan, and Kosher. They have many Flavors of which I've tried, Pecan Pie, Apple pie, Lemon bar, and Blueberry Muffin. They're very filling even though they are small, 1.8oz. This fall they will be replacing the fruit in my pack to cut down on bulk. Give em a try, see what you think. LÄRABAR ProStaffer. JK
Kroger and Wally world carry em. Kroger has more variety with open packs. Wally has apple pie in the box.
The lemon bars are my favorite with cherry pie maybe my #2. These don't taste like dirt as they are basically dried fruit and nut based. My only gripe was they aren't terribly high in protein. But I've found a few protein bars that aren't bad to.
Try the EPIC bars if you haven't already. The Bison and Turkey are good but the Angus is gross. They have things like almonds and cranberry mixed in. Paleo friendly
Thanks for the heads up. Those of us that are Gluten Free because of Doctor's orders, (and because I feel so much better without gluten) are used to everything "tasting like a dirt sandwich" but are still hopeful that someday someone will figure out how to make something that actually tastes good. What I wouldn't give to be able to sit down with a good book, a glass of milk and a sleeve of Ritz crackers again!!!!!!!
As protein bars go, (and you're looking at options) give the Oh Yeah One Bars a try. High protein (whey), gluten free and low sugar (1g, they use sugar alcohols which don't set well with some folks). The almond bliss taste almost like an Almond Joy. The Peanut Butter pie tastes like, well PB pie. The other brand I like are the Perfect Bars. Lower in protein, and uses peanut butter with fruit, nuts and natural ingredients. If you are looking at other more 'natural' bars and like PB check them out. Costco carries them. Only downside, they must be refrigerated. As I said before the larabar also good, but pretty fruit (sugar) forward. I've actually been wondering if they would dissolve and mix with some oatmeal for some variety while camping...
Peanuts aren't on the eating list. No Legumes for the most part. Don't know why. I've basically just cut out the grains and bread, I've dropped 10 lbs in two weeks and haven't really had any cravings. I'm a big bread eater. I could consume a whole loaf of fresh baked bread. Can't you just smell it Elkguide. Sorry thats mean. My wife is GF, she has an intolerance. I know what you mean about that stuff tasting like crap.
Update. So I've been working in a major city lately and have found quite a variety of bars beside the larabar we strated with in this thread. I'm sampling about 3 or so different brands a week and thought I'd add some into this thread. Caveman primal bars-like an epic bar but different texture-much more tender bite, but basically a jerky-like flavor. I think they are all chicken based. Quest bars most have heard of, basically a protein Brick that sits in your gut. Ok, but not particularly tasty. Vega sport bars may not be the most protein dense but seem to be a decent protein/flavor balance, in my opinion. Combat crunch are pretty darn tasty, gluten free, 20g protein and larger in size/volume than others (~100cal/oz).
I checked out those Epic bars online. Holy cow they're expensive. I haven't seen them around town. Where are y'all picking these up at?
Most of these bars are around $2-2.50 a piece at health food stores (Vitamin Shoppe & GNC are 2 big chains), gyms and occasionally other big retailers (target, Walmart) or grocers have some brands of bars but they're usually snack bars and not really the protein/meal replacement bars...to find the protein/meal bars at the big box stores look in they're pharmacy/health sections.
