Don't tell "Governor" Pat Quinn, or we in Illinois will have to register all edged tools, and won't be able to buy a chef's knife over 4 inches long (those just look scary).
If he could kill 9 people with a knife, just think how many he may have killed with an assault rifle and a 100 round magazine...
I think the big question is once the knives are all outlawed, will we be issued plastic sporks or chopsticks?
well the problem with them is they can be sharp also. I was thinking rubber utensils would be safer for us.
I think it would be safer for the government to mandate that all food be "gumable". We will need a new buracracy to oversee that, of course. We can probably pay for that with a 15% surtax on all food that will need to be slow-cooked for over 3 hours to get to the said "gumable" consistency.
If you take a look at the variety of shanks being produced in some of our maximum security prisons every day, you will quickly come to the realization that by simply making something illegal does very little to deter such activity.
If some crazy person wants to kill people they can. If they want to kill lots of people they can. Explosives, fire, guns, knives, poison, vehicles, the list goes on and on. Think of situations you encounter on a daily basis where large numbers of people are gathered. If some nutjob wanted to kill 20, 30, 100 people they could and they wouldn't have to have a firearm to do it. I'd concede it seems to be the weapon of choice but no matter what "law" you put on paper in a book somewhere it is virtually impossible to prevent people from getting something they want regardless of the items legality. If it exists it can be obtained(or made in many cases). Drunk drivers have killed over 10,000 people a year since 1991. That sounds like bad news but what is good about it is that in the early 90's the numbers were over 15,000 killed annually and they have dropped significantly every year since. The numbers in 2009 & 2010 were just over 10,000. "In 2010, the rate of drunk driving fatalities per 100,000 population was 3.3, representing a 64% decrease since 1982 and 48% since the inception of The Century Council in 1991. This means that for every 100,000 people in the US in 2010, slightly more than three people were killed in a drunk driving fatal crash, a rate that has been cut almost in half over the past two decades –down 48% from 6.3 in 1991."(http://www.centurycouncil.org/blog/2011/drunk-driving-fatalities-continue-fall) Less people are driving drunk and killing people because the penalties for it are stiff and can be life changing. The newer laws and regulations directly impact the person breaking the law. The laws did not make it harder for sober people(legal drivers) to get licenses, cars, or insurance. So why should some nutjob shooting up a bunch of people impact my rights? I'm supposed to believe that I'd be safe from the nutjobs of the world because I can't buy a certain weapon or magazine? Wishful thinking and you know what they say about that: wish in one hand and crap in the other and see which one fills up faster.
Why don't we just ban the Chinese, seems to be the common factor in these stories other than knives :p
Prisoneres make knives with almost nothing...umh hmm. I have grinders and lawn mower blades... umh hmm... I think I could make me a knife... umh hmm. How bout some mustard on them french fried poataters... umh hmm.
correct, but if more people were armed then how far do you think they would get in killing people before they got themselves shot by the crowd they were trying to kill?
but we will have to ban those shortly too as someone will use them to kill someone, then we will have to ban our hands too
That would depend. How well does a small caliber handgun stack up against a guy wearing a bullet proof vest, helmet and packing an assault rifle with a 100 round magazine? Would a couple of dozen cowboys having a shootout in the crowded theatre be the answer? Maybe...
