I'm new to hunting and I've been looking at knife sharpeners for my pack. Some of the smaller sharpeners I've been looking at have multiple components for sharpening on them. Carbide, Ceramic, and Diamond. Whats the difference? Which ones are better for what kind of blades?

Or would it be better to just go with an oil stone?

    Thanks

Here's what I carry in my pack!

    AccuSharp 005 Camo Tool Sharpener - Amazon.com

It works great! . . A fast & easy way to sharpen a knife! . . Just a few passes and the blade is sharp! I've even sharpened Muzzy broadheads with it!

If the stone gets worn, Just take it apart and switch them around! :)

The Spiderco kit is by far the best I have had for my folders, like my Benchmades, and some of my fixed blades. It requires a steeper bevel profile than some knives have to work best. For my bigger knives I use a bigger flat stone.

If you ever need new replacement blades Amazon has those too!

AccuSharp 3036-2024 Knife Sharpener Replacement Blades - Amazon.com

I found them last night when I was looking for the sharpener. . I bought my sharpener at a local hardware store and I wore the blades out on one. . I asked if they had the replacement blades and they didn't, so I bought another sharpener in camo! :)

I'm going to order a couple packs of replacement blades from Amazon to have on hand! . . But the blades will last a while and like I said, you can take it apart and turn them around!

This is a great sharpener for around 10 bucks .. Keep one in the truck, one in your pack.. And one attached to your hunting knife

I can understand needing a sharpener if your packing out an elk or something, but the OP is in mass. do you need to do more than gut a deer? any halfway decent knife should stay sharp enought to even quarter a deer...I've never considered carrying a sharpener....just curious why?

Speaking for myself .. I'm just OCD about my knives. I carry a sharpener in my pocket on a daily bases. I skin wire with my knife every day ( I'm a lineman) and just hate a dull blade. I've got almost as many sharpeners as I do knives. My knives really never get dull .. That's because I'm constantly touching them up.

I carry a Muzzy BH sharpener and it works great on almost any thin blade knife. I usually use a Case pocket knife for any field work.

I have a question. Do you take extended hunting trips? If you mostly do day or week-end trips for a couple of days why do you need to carry a sharpener?
