what have you all found to be the best method? currently i have a diamond flat stone that i go over and over and over again. will sometimes use a light coating of oil sometimes water... really just have never learned a tried and true method! (dont think the old man ever sharpened his blade) have just been keeping the blade at 17 degrees and checking it on arm hair or holding a piece of paper and slicing it. open to suggestions...
I really like using a Lansky. It has certain angles that you can sharpen the blade at. I only use this every 2 years or so on a blade as my main purpose with It Is to get the angle back where It's suppose to be or where I want It to be. When not using the Lansky I use white crock sticks to sharpen all my knives. These white crocks work great.
$8.50 small stone that Josh (Gri22) told me to pick up. I use it for my knives and for BH's. LOL, Schultzy....I just gave away my Lansky, today!
This is what my knife looked like after 15 months in Iraq! Still love this knife, but I need to see if Spyderco can do anything with it. I would even be happy if they could grind it down to a straight edge. All I gotta say is you guys would be surprised what you can cut with a knife!
Hook: Does that thing automatically adjust to the angle already on your knife? Or, does it create a new one? I agree.....it looks interesting.
I use my 30 year old Smith stone set.I can get my buck knife to shave the hair on my arm evey time.I bought a new smith set and the stones are not as good as my old one.It may be they need to break in .
And you swear by these that they work? Do the stones last? Can you get the knifes scary sharp? I'm willing to spend $100 but it better be the greatest thing since sliced bread if I do.
My cousin has one, and I can never get the thing to work. Somehow he took a chunk out of one of the stones, so now when you push the blade through it catches on the chunk. I gave up and went back to the flat stone
I have been using this on my hunting knives and BH's. It works as advertised. http://www.alaskabowhunting.com/GrizzlyStik-Razor-Sharp-System-P168C17.aspx I have also used this on my hunting knives with great succes but now just use it on the kitchen knives. http://www.chefscatalog.com/product/24335-chefschoice-angleselect-knife-sharpener.aspx
Cool thread. I am not a knife sharpening expert by any means but for now I have a fine bastard metal file that I use. It takes about 20 seconds and 10 strokes on each side, then I hit the whetstone for about 30 seconds. Any knife I have can be pretty sharp pretty quick. I need a diamond stone like Jeff talked about earlier. I saw him and Josh sharpen up some knives pretty quick, and they were darn scary sharp.
Speaking of knife sharpening, or just knives, I got this catalog the other day and went to their website. Thye have some awesome knives (awesome prices to LOL). If you like knives and, if like me you like to look at knives you probably won't buy ($$) then this is a cool catalog/website. http://www.agrussell.com/default.asp They do have knives in my price range and one in particular that I will probably get is this one, the deer hunter. I will probably go with the vg10 model. http://www.agrussell.com/ag-russell-deer-hunter-with-d2-blade/p/AGDH-D2/
Uh...well, now I don't know. I don't know how high of a standard you hold your knife sharpeners. It's simple and sharpens my knives to my liking... I received mine as a gift.
