I'm pretty certain I lost my knife, tonight. I'm also pretty certain I won't find it (brown wood handle inside a brown leather sheath...in the leaves). Appears I need a new one. I don't want to spend too much, though. I'm guessing no more than $150. Suggestions? Bonus if Cabela's sells it. I have a $50 gift card. Thanks a lot. Oh.....A friend of mine had a browning (I think) that was a folding knife. He's had it for years (15 or more) and still it's his "go-to". If you know which one this is, I'd appreciate it.
I was actually drooling over this one the other day.... http://www.cabelas.com/product/Hunt..._SEQ_104330880?WTz_st=GuidedNav&WTz_stype=GNU
I have an older model of this ( I think). I like it. I went to a store and sought out the help of someone who knew a bit more about knives than I did. The one I bought was also 40 bucks. I guess Buck has raised their prices. BTW, I have a Gerber and it CANNOT hold an edge. http://www.buckknives.com/index.cfm?event=product.detail&productID=3750
Check into Havalon piranah EDGE skinning knife. Im using one for the first time ever this year and Ill likely stay with this one. It has surgical steel replacement blade that are used in it. The sheth holds plenty of replacememts. I have used one blade on three Deer this year as well as skinning also. I believe Dan uses one also. A good friend of mine from here gave it to me to try. I love it! http://www.havalon.com/the-piranta-knives.html
http://www.schrade-knives.com/OldTimer194OT.html this has been my favorite deer knife fore a long time. I know. Its not pretty, its not fancy, but it stays sharp and sharpens easily, and is nimble in those tight places
Knives of Alaska knives are as good as they get but they're a bit heavy for packing around. Even given that, their Jaeger boning knife is my go-to blade. For light weight you can't beat the Havalon.
I have a Buck Vanguard that has gutted and butchered many deer. After the last job, 15 passes over the steel and it is ready for the next one. I also have smaller knife from Bark River Knives that I really like.
I got this one this year and love it. It worked thru the buck I shot earlier like a charm. http://www.cabelas.com/product/Outdoor-Edge-SwingBlade8482-Knife/715264.uts?Ntk=AllProducts&searchPath=%2Fcatalog%2Fsearch.cmd%3Fform_state%3DsearchForm%26N%3D0%26Ntk%3DAllProducts%26Ntt%3Dswing%2Bblade%2Bknife%26x%3D9%26y%3D12&Ntt=swing+blade+knife
Josh: What size Spyderco would be a good all-around deer knife? I have no idea. Thanks for all of the suggestions, guys. You saved me a lot of looking around. Some real bargains, too.
My wife wanted to go take a currsory look for the knife. I obliged, thinking NO WAY we find it. I'd walked 400yds through the woods in the dark, and not on any trail, last night. When I got to my doe, I had no knife. We looked while we walked back to where she was. When I got to a spot where I had to cross some logs, I told her....."It would probably be somewhere around here". "Here it is". How's that for luck. She saw this (below) knife on the forest floor, sheathed, amongst all those leaves. God I love that woman! Thanks for the heads ups though, guys. I appreciate it a lot.
Congrats on the Doe Jeff and congrats on finding the knife. I lost one this year too, but I knew it had to be near the doe I had gutted. Got back there 2 days later and there it was stuck in the ground. Typical for me..now if I could just find that darn grunt tube, I loose one of them every year too.
I'm REALLY glad you got that knife back. I'm sure you were pretty bumed out over it. It's hard to beat a W.R. Case knife. But you ain't getting one at Cabela's http://www.wrcase.com/knives/fixed_blades/browsefixed2.php?Family='Leather Handle'&Fixed='1'&Item='0385' I'd stay away from the new Buck knives. They just don't seem to be that good anymore. IMHO
