Hey guys what do you use to clean and oil your knives? I have a couple knives now and a new one on the way and i have never really paid attention to cleaning or oiling knives but i want to learn so i can keep them in good working order. Should i use certain types of oil for my hunting knives?

I've got a outdoor edge hybrid hook and usually after use I wash and dry real good then before putting it away either put a light coat of wd40 or some of the lucas gun oil I've got on it. Never had any trouble with it or any other blade doin that if its a decent quality metal. But I'd be curious to see what others do as well.

I stay clear of penetrating oils like wd40 ect , also be careful with oils on and around wooden handles. I use a light coat of storage oil on the blade, got it from ag Russell but a simple machine oil like 3 in 1 would fine also.

^^^ 3in1 is what I use on my blades. Just a dab to cover the blade a little. Never any probs so far on any of my blades.

Okay I read alot of people using the 3in1. Do I just put a little drop on both sides of the blade and then wipe it down?

That's what I do. Just be careful not to get it on the handle. :)

If it is a hunting knife that I will be using on wild game, I use a light film of vegetable oil after cleaning. That way, I never have to worry about contaminating meat with industrial type oils.

A good cleaning is likely the best thing you can do for your knives, clean and dry is good.
If its a folding knife a very small amount of oil on the hinge is all they need.

If you get it on the handle, it might make the knife extra slippery and gutting a deer will turn into a missing finger.

Okay that makes sense. I thought it might mess the handle up but causing it to be slippery makes alot of sense

Just depends on how much you use them, once or twice a year, or more if they gets wet often, water is not a knifes friend.

And more to the point for storage, wood has pores an over abundance of oil can soak in to the scales of a knife...doesnt do it any good better to be clean and dry. The only reason to keep oil on the blade of a knife is for storage to counter act everyday fluctuations in temp and humidity...if its seeing regular use its not needed. I have my custom knife collection in a humidity controlled safe so i really have no reason to go heavy on oil for blades.

I've got knifes that are 50 years old and never put anything on them. There is no rust or anything like that. Buy a good knife.... it'll last. I do wash the blood and mud off and dry thoroughly but that's it.

Vegetable oil would be good to I imagine. I was never really concerned about contamination because its just a minuscule amount of the oil I use. I wouldn't think that amount of 3in1 would be something to worry about. :)
