How many of you have ever had knee surgery? I have been having knee problems for the last few weeks and after several tests and an MRI Monday my doctor told me today that I have to go in for surgery on Tuesday morning. Sounds like I will be out of work for a few weeks which is no big deal just don't like the idea of surgery.

What type of surgery? I had a tear in my Meniscus and it was very minor. Walking the next day.

It depends on what they are doing. If they are smoothing a small tear, its no big deal. A couple years ago I had a large strip of cartilage tear and flip over and twist. Made loud popping noises and got jammed a few times. They had to take the whole piece out. I was gimped up 2 months.

When I was a kid they grafted the other knee cartilage and I was in a brace 6 months plus. That knee is still good. The other one lights up like a bulb with arthritis on an xray and they want to replace the knee in a few years. Old sucks!

Don't be a hero after meniscus surgery. The first few days just hobble around a little/keep flexing your leg muscles to keep your muscles from atrophying too much. Ice your knee every 2 hours for 20 minutes, keep it elevated most of the time, and take the anti-inflammatories and pain killers as tolerated. Trust me on that system, it works.

Even though I was running within one week (much younger and stronger) of meniscus surgery, I had some serious pain and swelling because I was stupid and walked out of the hospital and acted like mr tough guy. My knee swelled up so bad I had to have my surgeon drain two full massive syringes of blood off my knee just so I could sleep...it hurt that bad.

Have you gotten a second opinion? My knee was killing me and I was sure I'd need surgery but couldn't take the time off so I suffered through for many many months and when I finally went in he said I could take care of it with just some therapy and its been great. I couldn't believe it. 20 minute a day on stationary bike with very little resistance and the rpm between 85-95. Pain was gone in a few days. I couldn't believe it.

Remember. Doctors have bill to pay to.

Ferg I will be sending you a box of tissues for your crying! I have had 4 all on the same knee! From the torn meniscus to calcium deposits twice, and the last one was a hole that they had to put a cadaver bone in the hole. Here is the outcome of that surgery. I am still playing softball and feel really good. Not like it used to be for sure but it is ok. You will be fine buddy! Good luck and take it easy.
