I haven't personally seen someone not use them... They are going to help protect the end of the carbon on the arrow, give you a better FOC and even help increase penetration. If you hit something hard, often times the collar will bend and allow you to replace it vs. wrecking your arrow. If you don't like the GT system with the 'nub insert' + outsert you could use the VAP components (like their one piece insert/outset) - those should fit in just fine (thought you would want to double check)...
