When most people think about speed/KE we need to keep in mind that most will be shooting at or under 40 yrds. With that in mind I would sacrafice 30-45 fps for more energy each and everytime. The deeper the penetration the more trauma will be caused, more energy also allows it to drive better on misplaced shots at times as well. I shoot 62lbs with a total weight of 410 grains I'm happy with that setup, keeps me above 6.5 grains per inch and I'm shooting a stiffer shaft for this setup a .340 GT's they should plenty accurate and drive deep. A good head is of improtance as well, as if the head can't transfer the energy well then we loose out as well. At 270 fps and say I take a 30 yrd shot on a deer it takes .33 of a second to cover that, plenty good enough I want the KE to be high, the more arrow mass the more drive that arrow will have. If I shoot at 20 yrds .22 of a second to impact, that is fast enough I don't need to worry about tricking out the speed IMO. I have done quite a bit of longer range hunting and I liken this argument to a rifle projectile, I can have burning fast speed bot better trajectory, but if I don't choose the proper bullet and misplace shots then all the speed is for not and I end up tracking stuff along ways. One reason I have never likes the .22 cal riflles for coyotes very few bullets meant to hammer hard through bone on something of that mass, you get alot of bullet splash and lack of penetration when I switch to a bullet with a thicker jacket I get better performance, more energy transfer and more room for my human error as the range increases because of better bullet selection, even though the bullet isn't going 3,600 FPS in fact my loads are at 2,720 fps, I gain in performance! Trajectory is far easier to over come than wind drift! Trajectory pretty much a constant not so with wind drift. Carry ON
This has been an entertaining way to start my morning. Some people just don't get what everyone is trying to tell them. Oh, one thing I meant to say from the beginning, the title KE vs speed doesn't really make sense. It should have been KE vs momentum
That right there. You think you are learning a lot around here now, just wait until you listen more and talk less. I mean that in the nicest way possible.
You really do like to stir the pot don't you. Man, I swear. You would make a great woman!! Drama. I mean that in the nicest way possible!!
Double sigh. If you thought my last post was to stir pot, then I repeat, you just aren't going to get it.
HHHmmm, Its hard to tell what you do and don't mean Vito. I get what you are saying though. Give me a couple weeks to learn another 5 years worth and then I'll start posting on every thread again!!! That was a sarcastic statement just so you know.
If nothing else it has been intertaining right? Most pages and post of any thread that is only a couple days old. Maybe since I have been on. If not, its close. If this was a T.V. show, it would have been a hit!! HHHHMMMMM, Bowhunting.com Forum reality show maybe?? There are much worse ones out there and they get ratings. lol
I pitched a reality hunting show to JZ that would chronicle the hunting life and times of Vito. It got shot down. Something about nudity. But he never complains when I text him.
I really do not know what VITO's problem is. STICK has been asking legitimate questions that i would even love to hear the answer to as well. CANT WE ALL JUST GET ALONG LOL. Thanks for all of the help guys. I feel after this thread I have gotten a really good arrow for my setup.
We may be disfunctional at times around here but, we get results in the endd. HHHMMmm I recal a ertain motorcycle reality show that was based on that exact concept. Yep, I think it could work!!!
,i'm basically shooting same set up as you, cept less poundage beman 400s,100 grain mx3s, blazers. never had a problem on deer size game, used same set up on 435lb blackie this past fall. if i were after something larger(elk, moose) would go heaver set up on arrows and bow than what i am currently shooting. just my opinion
