regarding your "kill plots" do you look for a clearing or do you fire up a saw and do it your own? and best seed

I looked for an area where there was plenty of sun light and tall weeds. The sun will be needed to grow the plot and the weeds are a good sign that the PH level is good. I am trying loose leaf lettuce this year. It will not die with frost and it supposedly grows well in the fall; however, I've never heard of anyone else using it prior. I researched the web on several (hippy) organic farm sites for ideas on what to plant and i read a lot of articles about deer eating everyone’s lettuce. I choose loose leaf because it grows faster and doesn't have the bug and disease issues as head lettuce does. I have heard many mixed reviews on Turnips; however, I used turnips as filler around my lettuce. I hope some of this information is useful to you and good luck.
