Then maybe they should rethink having kids. If you don't have the time or patience to deal with a kid that needs a outlet in some way then you probably don't need to have any to begin with.
ADHD is a lot more than just a lot of energy. It can affect the child’s ability to learn, deal with others, control their emotions, handle difficult tasks, and behavior. It is not as simple as tire them out and everything is fine.
This. I would also think something like ADHD would have been revered in past times when having energy and restlessness were deemed desirable. I for one would want to have ADHD if I was forced to walk by foot across the US and then homestead an area where I had to split wood, plow, gather game and water everyday etc. I think sitting behind a desk isn't for everyone and society is just different. Half the desirable traits now a days would have led to a quick death back 200 years ago.
Easy, I'm the 7th son of 8 kids in my family, pretty sure I wasn't planned. I don't think the majority of us were really PLANNED but even if planned some kids are a breeze and some need a lot more attention. I've got a few friends that had their 3rd child because their first two were so easy but the 3rd child for some reason is harder than the first two together. When parents start telling me how active/ ADD their kid is I always say "GREAT, keep them busy on positive things and putting that energy to good use and they'll do great things. Many CEO's of huge companies say they only need/sleep 4 hours a night. If a kid was doing that we'd drug him down.
Absolutely, although hyperactivity is a portion of the disorder, that isn't the real issue. The ability to focus on important task such as reading/learning. Paying attention In class and so forth. My nephews biggest issue was coping with others his own age. He was great with babies and toddlers but couldn't manage to get along with others in school. He had 3 brothers(one step brother his own age) and the problem was not nearly as prevalent when he was with them. And every form of punishment was tried.
I honestly don't know enough about it and maybe I'm giving the kids more credit than they deserve. My oldest nephew is major ADHD and his parents got divorced and had a hard time with him. The kid is wicked smart and an over achiever when he wants to but, he got into some crap and did some really messed up stuff that I don't think he can forgive himself for and so he's really lost. IMO
Guess I'm just looking at different approaches other than drugs. I listened to this on RadioLab a few weeks ago of how a few parents approached Autism in their child and pretty much cured them. Just really got me thinking about so many ailments that we're trying to fix with drugs rather than understanding. Juicervose - Radiolab
As a parent of a son with ADD, I can tell you it is not about discipline or wearing a kid down. It is about the child's ability to focus on things. Sadly though, the fact that he has ADD and has been treated has shut some doors for him. It is an automatic disqualifier for the military.
Afflicted, I agree to a degree. I know with my nephew he responded well to one on one activities and teaching. He spent a lot of time with his paw paw and didn't get his med while with him. BUT, he was getting one on one attention and was able to cope. His biggest issues were in a classroom type environment.
I wish I knew about ADHD when I really started to feel the affects in high school. I was a near 4.0 student my last two years in high school. When I attended college I lost my support structure and daily routine. I was lost in college because I had no structure and my grades plummeted. Sitting in 1.5 hour lecture classes darn near killed me. I couldn't do it so many times I skipped class. I just couldn't sit there and listen to a piece of chalk hit the chalkboard over and over. Luckily I got myself together, learned a little about myself, and graduated. One of the best things I ever learned about how to cope with adhd is caffeine. I kid you not. Coffee for me is a godsend.
I don't think that meant you had ADHD, that's almost every kid in college Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
