While down in Florida working disaster response to hurricane Irma we were working in the keys and had the opportunity to see quite a few key deer. This picture isn't very good but it was taken with my phone at night. He was a ten point with a few stickers. The game wardens we were working with told us the key we were working on has the only population of them in the world. They are no bigger than a goat. The blue picture is a different buck I think he was an 8 point. Headed home now should be there by tomorrow night. My season opens next Saturday and I've got stuff to get ready. Wasn't expecting to work back to back hurricanes this year. The Florida keys are a mess. Those folks could use prayers or anything else people can do for them. 5101.jpeg KIMG0201.jpg

I saw some Key Deer while I was driving through the Keys a couple years ago. They were around the Big Pine Key area. Prior to that I had no idea them things existed? Yep, they very small.

    Lol

I live here. I've fed Key deer by hand. They are off limits and scattered throughout the Keys.

In fact , I've seen dwarfed deer on the mainland that I was sure had key deer genes.

They are a treasure for sure and are very tame from taking handouts over the years.

I was there a month ago (Big Pine), loved the key deer. Glad to see them survive the storm

Yes, they seemed to be very tame. They would come up when we were out of the trucks and act like they wanted to be fed. Definitely not afraid of people. Hope you were able to weather the storm ok, it's a mess down there.

They are very cool. Saw a few about 10 years ago when we vacationed down in the Keys.

Swampstomper, what type of work do you do?

Yes these deer now basically are a Florida treasure and our pets.

I still say, people are grabbing them here and there and moving them north into upper key areas as pets and such. Against the law but so is bringing wild boar out of the state to other states.

As for Irma ? It was a madhouse before and after. Our electric power and water system infrastructure is shot. I think I can sneeze and blow the power outta commission. Sad but true. Each storm it gets worse.
