Can anyone help me out on the Kentucky Archery Season. My understanding is that it opens September 1, 2012 and runs through sometime in January. Is that Sept. 1 date limited to certain zones or is that state wide opening day?

I have access to some land in the south eastern part of the state and am looking into purchasing a non resident license/permit. Looking at about $195 total with permit/license/Hunters Ed Opt Out.

Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I have not seen a new calender, just the 2011-2012 season but typically the first weekend in September has been the opening weekend state wide.

Bag limits as well as being able to shoot antlered or antlerless will vary.

So being able to shoot antlered deer may very well vary form zone to zone. I'm afraid that the zone I have access to might be in a zone that will not allow me to hunt/kill a antlered deer in velvet. I was really excited at the prospect of being able to hunt whitetail in. September seeing that my season in Indiana doesn't open until Oct. 1

So in other words, not all zones allow you to take antlered deer starting September 1?

Last year all zones allowed antlered deer the first weekend.

Things may change this year but I doubt it.

The restrictions are usually in gun season. And that is usually antlered only allowed.

1st Saturday in September. Either sex in all zones. There are 4 zones with 3 and 4 being buck only during gun season except for the end of late ml in December. Also 3 and 4 have shorter gun seasons and you can only take bucks with a bow in gun seasons. As for bag limits 1 buck, but you will have to check on does, I think it's 4 total with the bonus tags. I think all of south east Kentucky is zone 4 meaning lower deer density. I hunt se Ky and there are some good spots and big deer, but there are also spots where you could have a long lonely season. Check the KDFWR site. They have all the regs and harvest info by county and weapon.

I will check that out - thanks for your all your help. I had been reading that deer density was going to be much lower in the area of the state I am looking into hunting and I also know that the terrain is going to be more difficult to hunt. I've got access to over 30,000 acres, not sure what that means for my chances - I have only been looking at Google Earth and it looks to be 95% Timber/Hills/Mountains. Either way, it's worth a couple days out of the office for a great adventure.

Any other things I should know about hunting Kentucky / South Eastern KY?

Deer density is lower but there are some real brute nasty's in the hills. There should be some red oaks starting to drop. In September if you can find water in the hills that will be a good spot. You have to look at a topo and ask yourself if I was a deer what looks like the path of least resistance. Boots on the ground will verify the topo map we do have bears, but I have never worried about them. Copperheads and rattlesnakes are a fact of life. On 30,000 acres I guarantee your not alone. Locals don't really pay attention to property lines and the area may get hunted by trespassers. I usually carry when I bow hunt which is legal in Ky. I always keep about 100 feet of rope in the truck. It will come in handy when you stick a deer and it runs into a holler with 40 degree slopes.

Oh don't worry about the banjo music, it's when you hear it stop you should get scared ;)

This is great information and a classic presentation! LOLing at the banjo music! I am really looking forward to the adventure of it all - of course a big whitetail in velvet would be amazing! But I'm not greedy, Indiana is basically flat - hunting in this kind of terrain could be very educational and fun! At least I won't need to bring my IPod for LIVE entertainment.
