I hunted it a couple years ago for 2 days. GREAT looking deer country, and some big bucks get killed from that part of Kentucky every year.

Gri22ly doesn't live there, but you can bet he will know about it.

It's not to far from some excellent bowfishing. :D
That's all I know about it.

(I have looked at moving to KY. I'm thinking that area or someplace in MO. ...dang I'd like to move. Tomorrow. )

I live about 30 miles from KY and have been considering doing some Sept. hunting down that way. I'm only about 1 hour from Henry Higginson, I know there are some nice bucks taken in that area.

    Maybe next year!

Is Kentucky a draw state? Also, I was wondering why they would have a spread min of 15" (if I read correctly) that requires "quess work" instead of point minimum, something you can "accurately see"?

Only place I know of in KY that requires a spread min. is some of the national forests. In general, I don't think it's state-wide (and I know it wasn't, where I hunted).

If you kill one that doesn't meet the required 15" spread, your not eligible to hunt the next year, that pertains to national forests only, not a state wide mandated.

Thanks guys!! gri22ly I am not leasing my Sgt. at work has a uncle that has been inviting me down to bow hunt as long as we want. I don't know the town yet but my Sgt said he has 350 acres and it is pretty much rolling oaks with a creek running through it. He said his uncle only shoots 1 buck a year and they are always big?? My Sgt. is not a hunter and when I asked him what he thought was big he said like this, and I said that would be about a 150 class so he is suppose to get me some pics.. Sounds like this place is worth a good look at.. Walt
PS> gri22ly those pics on your last post are those trail cam photos from that area?

So if I kill a 160" buck with a 12" spread I wouldn't be nailed for "poaching"? I would just have to sit out a year?

Me and gri22ly had the same discussion and I know exactly what your talking about. If I have an opportunity at a 160" with a 12" spread...looks like I'll be sitting out the next year. It's not considered poaching and I can't recall what they refer to it as, but you would be sitting on the sideline next season I do believe. Gri22ly may have some better input on it more than I do.

I would imagine they would let it go because it would fit the intent of the law (to let them grow into a mature buck), but it would be nice to know how it would be viewed if the officer was having a bad day and decided not to let you go. I wouldn't want a game law violation on my record.

This "area specific" spread minimum reminds me of Pa's AR. In some areas (6 counties in western Pa) a 6pt with a 20" spread wouldn't be a legal buck. Somehow the PGC thinks numbers of points has something to do with maturity?

There is really no method that is foolproof. I saw a 6 point several times this year that will score 115, and next year (yep he's still alive) could easily make Pope, but in many areas he would be illegal.

Then the 1st 8 point I shot this year scored over 140" yet was only 14 2/8" inside spread, again a buck that would be illegal in many areas.

I would like to see IL adopt some kind of a restriction, but honestly not sure what would work the best. They all have their pitfalls.

Dan, you're absolutely right. There are no (good) cookie cutter guidelines for AR.
