How much KE is necessary for a mechanical BH to be effective?

I don't think there's a standard answer for this one. It depends greatly on which mechanical you're using. A 2" will require more than a 1 1/2"......and the number blades and the manner in which the mechanical opens are all factors that need to be figured in.

So, if a person were getting 40ftlbs of KE out of their rig what mechanical should they use?

This may sound at first like a smartaxed answer.

Whatever it takes to get it to something vital...

There may not be a standard answer, but I think Bruce's post is a good general place to start.
...shot placement is a much greater variable. If you shoot 89# of KE (I do) and make a poor shot (I have) it is no match for a good shot with 37# KE (Christine does). Although we both shoot Muzzy heads (fixed blade).

The bottom line is to have your set-up tuned correctly.

    Hope that helps.

I haven't gotten everything together yet, but I've been able to make some estimates. Using this page http://www.backcountrybowhunting.co...w_wt=350&draw_leng=27&draw_wt=60&string_wt=10 and making conservative estimates, the 350 grain arrows (100 gr head) will give me 271 fps and 57.1 ft-lbs (can't wait to see if the speed estimate is anywhere close). I have a few rage 2-blades that came with the bow when I bought it, they did a decent job on a pumpkin (man I really just wanted to shoot something!)

I'm starting to figure out what I need as far as arrows go, it's been a process. Trying to figure out what my options are. If I'm borderline with the KE, I'll go fixed for sure (probably these muzzy 3 blades I keep hearing good things about). Getting my arrows cut to a proper length now (26.5 instead of the out-of-the box 30"). Some more practice, and then start tuning it.

    Thanks
    Mike
