Anyone know much about kayaks? My wife and I are looking at getting a couple of them this spring. Our daughter just turned 4 and our son just turned 7, so we're looking at 2 person kayaks that we can each take one of the kids in and do some trips on the rivers around us here. They're lazy rivers, with a few small rapids in a couple of them, if that makes a difference. I don't want cheap ones, but don't need top of the line either. Any suggestions?
my 2 kayaks (from left to right): Pelican Castaway - cheap sit on top Native Ultimate 12 - hybrid kayak/canoe, awesome seat, storage, very stable, but no scuppers, so it holds water
No, we want kayaks. We already have canoes and don't want to put 4 people in one and the kids are too young to help paddle to split up into two canoes. I "think" we want sit ins Hooker.
I also have a Native Ultimate 12. Very stable boat. They sell some 14.5' tandem models that should suit your needs.
tandem touring sit in kayaks are going to get expensive... maybe something like the Jackson Rivi-T? Or the Native Ultimate 14.5 Tandem
I'm afraid my kids will be dropping **** in the water if they were in a sit on top. The Native looks pretty nice.
Dont want to hijack this thread but question for you Hooker. Hows the stability in the Native? Im looking for a kayak that I can fly fish out of.
I love the Native I have, I didn't have a lot of experience to draw from and the information I received from the guys on here was very helpful in deciding which to purchase. I bought the Native 12 Ultimate Angler for myself, it is really a nicely made boat. I used in mostly for lake fishing locally and at our summer camp in the ADKS. . I also hauled it down to the beach house and fished a couple calm mornings off the shore. That was a super experience. Fishing and crabbing in the bay was breeze. It is very stable and I can stand up and fly cast in calm conditions without a problem. As my son gets older I can see adding a tandem 14 to the mix. ....now I am looking at something for my wife to use on the lake. Austin kayak was a pleasure to deal with.
I have a Jackson coosa I use to fish for smallmouth here in Wva. I take it through class 3 rapids all the time. Very stable yak and very easy to stand in. Native watercraft makes some fine kayaks to. It all depends how much money you want to sink in them. You can go to a box store and get a sit in cheap but you have a cheap kayak. Native or Jackson your going to have close to a grand in them. Old town makes some sit ins called the vaper you can get them for 350 dollars more or less and they are well made. Good luck kayaks are a blast.
The Native Tandems look nice, but I don't know that I want to spend $1700 on each kayak if we'll only use it 10-15 times a year. I see Austin Kayak has some Wilderness Systems kayaks for around a grand and they have good reviews. Thoughts? 14.5'. This looks like exactly what you want, IMO. I ordered my kayak from Austin Kayaks. Great company. I got free shipping, but I'm not sure if that was just a promotion or if that is a normal thing.
Free shipping here to from AK.....I was on the fence about getting mine locally ....A place had it at the same price as Austin Kayak, however the two hour one way drive and the .08% tax pushed me to Austin.
