Hard to say for sure but in Minnesota there is a 7 day waiting period and a background check to buy a handgun, you can go into any store and buy a shotgun or rifle same day as long as you pass the federal background check. Last I checked you are just as wounded if you are shot with a long gun vs a pistol. Gun laws are very convoluted. Kansas seems to be taking a common sense approach.

I believe that there should be some training involved before you carry any gun. People are stupid plain and simple and NEED to be educated. Matt is right you could never weed out every hot head in the country people are Stupid they will do stupid things. Most of us grew up around guns and were taught to respect them, some of these ghetto clowns never made it passed the 8th grade and learned how to shoot a gun by watching it on tv. These are the people that need to be trained.

It won't fix it but it will weed it out.

I agree with this. I wouldn't really use the word stupid as much as some being perhaps a bit ignorant in how to properly handle a handgun. CCW training won't prevent people from intentionly harming others but could prevent some accidents from happening.

So what types of training would be considered enough? We just got CCW and when it was first coming together they were trying to require the same training as LEO's in order to apply for permit.

It changes nothing. Criminals still carry whether they have a permit or not and citizens have every right to protect themselves and bear arms as the 2nd amendment says. How someone uses a firearm should dictate the repercussions, not the act of carrying itself. I own multiple knives and even a hatchet and they require no permit. I could literally walk up to someone and stab or hack them to death, how does a permit come into play? If someone uses bad judgement they will be punished according to the law. Why is this confusing?

I was writing a long reply to this topic but had second thoughts because I am a Canadian and didn't think my comments would be well received no matter which side of the debate I fell on. Let me just say that I like guns and own a bunch of them, but from an outsider point of view I think that you need to find a balanced approach to your CC laws. I have been a LEO for over 24yrs and therefore carry a firearm every day I work, but in the interest of community/public safety there are some people that just shouldn't be carrying a firearm (CC or otherwise).

Stupid is a strong word but what I had in mind is the people in this video.

The law doesn't make or force anyone carry a gun.

I am not worried about criminals, I am worried about perception we get as responsible gun owners. Owning a gun is a right, but rights can be revoked by a vote. We always need to show what it means to be a responsible gun owner. I can win any argument about what criminals do with a gun, but it's a tough one to win when someone does something stupid and we have no precautions to weed them out.

Of course, anyone who carries a gun should be respectful and responsible. The same goes for people not carrying a gun. A law abiding citizen carrying a gun doesn't change common sense or cause and effect. Wrongful action pays the price, period. If someone breaks the law they go through the justice system. Anyone can kill by any means, having a gun changes nothing. You may not be worried about criminals but some are and everyone has the right to bear arms as the Constitution says, there's no other argument. The 2nd amendment IS our gun carry permit.
