This is my first year hunting for a week in kansas on my buddies lease. I have never hunted any place other than louisiana and mississippi mostly hills, hardwood bottoms, and some swamps. Whats the best tactics for getting on deer fast when hunting fields and some hardwoods. I know mainly look for hardwood funnels but i'm only there for 5 days. Are buck lures affective in November in kansas like tinks 69? Anything you can add will be helpful.
haha yea i hunted the last few days in 85-90 degrees down here and i pulled up where i'm going to hunt out there and its 35 tonight. wow
I have never had any luck with scents like Tinks, but scrape drippers work pretty well certain times of the year. If you are hunting large ag fields for 5 days, i think it would be worth your while to just scout one evening and see where the deer are coming out into the field. Then you can narrow down your stand sites. Depending on your deer, rattling could work out for you during the rut. Its hard to tell, as it seems pretty specific as to what places it works and what places it doesn't. Also, being from LA, definitely dress warmer than you think you will need to. The wind is pretty ruthless in KS, and it cuts right through a lot of clothes. Layers are your friend.
I will go to Bass Pro soon and get some more layers for sure!! Thanks for the tips cole i hope i can get on a good one been dreaming of kansas since i was a teen beautiful plae with some awesome deer
Like you said, hardwood funnels, and i would look at the topo maps and aerial photos. I would definitely study the topo maps to see the ravines and ridges that deer might go through or around. There are several videos on youtube that kind of explain it better then me. Whenever i hunt a place for the first time i tend to hunt the spots i picked out already. But i tend to find another spot that i like after i am there and have seen the land. Also when you get there, i would scout on your way into the stand and out of the stand. Goodluck brother
I'm in Baton Rouge we are very close. My dad hunted Kansas for the first time last year and on first 15 minutes of opening day of rifle season killed this deer. We are looking at hunting the walk in public land next year. So if you have any pointers for me that would be great also. Most important in Kansas you can bring you walker hounds ( just joking ) thought I would throw that in there Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
