That's heavy sarcasm if you can't tell.

As if it wasn't enough that I'm still infuriated with myself for making such a lousy shot the other night, my rangefinder is now no longer working. Not sure if anyone else here has experienced this issue with a Nikon 440, but all I get is "---" when trying to make a yardage reading at any distance in any light. Not to mention my mode button doesn't work. I tried a hard reset, and it still doesn't work. Seems to be a common problem amongst 440 users, and most were able to get it to work with the hard reset, or they sent it in for repairs. Nikon wants over the price it costs new to repair it outside of the warranty (which mine is), so I just bought a Bushnell Scout with ARC (don't need it, but why not).

Now I'm just waiting on the skunks, and this run of great luck this season will be complete.

I couldn't get my Leupold range finder to work last weekend for the IL opener. I looked at it for the first time lastnight since then and the darn thing was working. Think it was just screwing with me.

Did you try a new battery in the rangefinder?

ive had the nikon 440 for awhile now too and every so often it wont read yardage for some reason and then the next time it will. must be a mechanical problem with them.

Yep, played with the contact at he bottom of the battery chamber, too. A couple of people mentioned bending it slightly back toward the top, but it didn't make a difference with mine.

I loved the rangefinder up until this point. It was light weight, simple, and accurate.

I've noticed that a lot of the newer range finders are bigger than the 440. I'm not looking forward to when I have to replace mine...if it does crap out on me.

The Bushnell you picked up would have been what I'd suggest. My Leupold's a little gitchy and complicated but you can't beat the customer service. When the module in mine went TU they had me a new unit in a week. Thing is, I haven't heard of anyone having problems with the Bushnell to begin with.

Mine liked to mess with me too until it messed with me 1 to many times. It met an untimely death last year.Would never buy another 1.

Try a new battery. If that does not work, call Nikon and they will Email you the steps to take for the process of repair. I am going through this right now because my brother said that I BROKE his range finder, because it stopped working when I had it.

Already tried a new battery. I will contact them and see if they will do that. Already have my RF on order, so if it gets working, it will just be a backup, or I will sell it.

I've had my 440 for 8 years now and have never had the problem you mentioned. I did have the battery crap out last winter and replaced it and it's still great, they have it rated the most accurate at a 50 yard reading ahead of the the Swavorski and the ,dang mind freeze LOL. Oh well your luck will change for the good my friend. Keep your head up and God Bless .
