Good Morning or afternoon (depending on your location). I was reviewing some posts on Bowhunting.com and thought this is a group that I would like to join. I am just now getting back into the wonderful sport of archery and hopefully bow hunting. I shot recurves for 15 years or so but have not touched a bow in over 30 years. In July I purchased a Mathews Drenalin LD, 70# @ 31", Cobra Sindwinder 3-pin sight, QAD Ultra rest, Carbon Express Maxima 350 arrows trimmed to 30" with Muzzy 100GR 3 blade broadheads. Right now I am grouping in 4" @ 20 yds with the practice blades. I guess my question is, "Do the Muzzy practice blades have similar flight characteristics as the razors?" I know I can shoot them and see but I have enough arrows that need refletching due to hits with FPs and the practice blades that I really did not want to subject them to really sharp blades.
Thanks for the welcome Rut Junkie. I really liked what I saw and read in the forums and the site as a whole.
Good to have you! Instead of shooting groups, aim for different spots on your target. This will end your problems of damaged arrows and fletching. Good luck!
welcome.. I think there could be a small difference between them, I used to just shoot the blades for practice, you can replacements cheap!
Shot Muzzy's for years, great head. This is what I do. Now I have old blades so that's the easy part. If you do not, just figure on ruining one set and shoot one arrow at a time. Sure it's more time consuming but you can concentrate on one arrow at a time. Use a set of blades and shoot an arrow. If it needs tweaked (ie, adjusting insert, spin tested etc..) and once you have that arrow zero'd, put that set of blades in the next arrow and do the same. Before long you'll have a set of arrows you have 100% confidence in with NEW blades for hunting. After this season, keep your used blades for practice and the swap them out for new for hunting. Never hunt with blades that were once shot, even into a target unless you sharpen them back to beyond factory sharp. Dull blades are an absolute no no.
Vabowman, I will concede that It is better to be sure of the flight than risk losing an animal. Thanks everyone.
Just to follow up with everyone. I took Rob/PA's advice and donated three sets of blades to the cause. The Muzzys hit same POI as field points. They actually shot truer than the practice blades. Thanks again for the advice. As I said I am not new to archery but I guess I am a novice when it comes to compounds. I am impressed with how far equipment has progressed from the '70's. I really look forward to belonging to this forum and hopefully I will be able to contribute before long. Good hunting to all!!! Dan
From one Dan to another, welcome to the sight,,, looks like the guys have already handed out some great info for ya,,,your at the right place!!
