The big bucks/trail cam thread got me thinking....... Any of you worry about locals reading your stuff online? I've had some issues with trespassers, etc.........I've shared some of it with a few of you personally. Because of these experiences, I'll never post pics like those trail cam pics publicly again. Hell......I'm hesitant to publicly share success pics sometimes. It sucks, but unfortunately it's just not worth the hassle it can create for me anymore. Anyone else have thoughts on this or a good story to tell?
Yeah I thought about it. I am off the beaten path and can't even find someone who hunts seriously like I do. So not really a issue for me.
I've never been burnt because of something i posted online but i have had people weasle into my spots before. This past fall, i was working with a guy who had some minor violations on his property. This property also contained some very large and recent rubs. I had future plans of asking the property owner for permission to hunt sometime towards the following season(2009). Last time i stopped by for an inspection i happen to have a coworker with me. I told him that i was going to inquire about hunting in the future and he said since the guy was in violation i should wait atleast a year, which i had plans of doing anyway. 3 days later i get a call from my coworker saying that he got permission and hung 3 stands at that property. Not a huge deal because i wasnt really looking to make the 30 minute drive to Dillsburg that often anyway. I told my coworker that it was a slimeball move to pull something like that and not to worry because we wouldnt ever be hunting together anyway. When it comes to my public land spots, I BS pretty much everybody that asks about them.
I don't worry too much. The land I hunt is posted (allthough everything around it mostly is a free for all) I block out road names on aerials & I don't really share any other info that would lead anyone to where I hunt.
Not on this site I don't worry about It but on a few others that are more local I'm careful on what I put up for bear and deer pics. It's too bad a person has gotta be careful but people these days will do anything they can to leech off of the next guy.
RJ, I feel the same way as you do. I have been more hesitant to share on the open boards rather than pm. I don't think that anyone here would or could try to hunt my ground for a buck that I posted, but ya never know. It's not a lesson that I plan on learning. The main trespassers that I have are ones that have been doing it for years and are pretty good at it.
i thought about it but as little as i hunt and the small piece of land i hunt it wouldnt be a prob.... but i can see if a person knows who you are and where you hunt. if i had my own land i would deff not post stuff.
I don't think anyone from my immediate area is on here or the "other" site but if I had a pic of a really nice buck (heck considering my area even a decent buck) I probably would not post it. When I killed my biggest buck back in 2005 I was on one of our farms that the path leading in is cabled off. I was pretty deep in the woods from where I can park let alone from the road. I use a LW climber. The weekend after I killed the buck I went back in just to see if any fresh sign showed up and I found a bright shiney new Bud Light can in the middle of the woods not 30 yds. from the tree I shot the deer from. Someone walked a VERY long ways from the road just to look around??
I will DEFINITELY second and third that comment simultaneously!! :d I never mention specifics when I talk about my land, and the pics I post are so generic that they could have been taken anywhere in the state of Illinois or Missouri, depending on which state I'm hunting at the time...
I do worry about it quite a bit. Not so much for deer b/c I hunt almost solely on my lease and my farm so those are very controlled, but I'm not into giving people GPS coordinates for public land hot spots. I'll help them, but I am not going to give them everything
I dont worry. I post a lot of pictures and video, but i never say exactly "where". I have many properties scanning 7 different Ohio counties, and alot of it is family land that is lived on. Im not to worried.
Not too much. However, there's ONE terrain feature that borders my property that stands out on aerials if anyone is somewhat familiar with the area. We have our own issues with trespassers unrelated to web posting, though.
